Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build one from scratch?
An existing theme is a practical starting point when its layouts suit your products and you want to keep the setup lighter. We can adjust it to reflect your brand, and later theme updates are simpler to manage. A custom theme suits a more unusual catalogue or a distinct way of presenting products, but later layout changes need development work. Think about who will make those changes after launch as well as what the initial design needs to do.
For features outside the theme, an app can add functionality quickly, though it brings recurring fees, extra scripts and a dependence on its maker. Custom code or a custom app fits a specific requirement, with maintenance needed as Shopify changes. Write down what the feature must do before choosing either route; that gives you a clearer basis for comparing the work involved.
If you sell internationally, one store can use markets for local-currency pricing, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit different catalogues or teams in each country, or a need for payouts in different currencies. The choice affects how you organise the catalogue and who manages it.
Local
What Liverpool organisations need from a Shopify store
Liverpool has creative and digital businesses alongside hospitality organisations. A creative brand selling directly to customers might need reviews and subscriptions connected to its store data; a retailer with a physical shop needs its online and in-store stock in one system. Shopify’s point-of-sale app can sit alongside the online store for that stock setup.
Liverpool’s universities are another kind of organisation with potential merchandise catalogues. For a university team selling products, automated collections can group items by consistent tags or product types, while metafields give the theme a structured place to show details such as dimensions or care instructions. Staff need a clear way to maintain those fields when products change.
Rules
What a United Kingdom store needs to handle
If you sell online to UK customers, the store needs to tell them they can cancel an order up to 14 days after delivery without giving a reason. We set up a returns policy page where that information is available to shoppers, using the policy written for your business.
A UK limited company must display its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status on its website. We set up space for those details in the store, using the information you provide.
How it runs
How a Shopify development project runs with us
We are MSH Technologies, a studio in India working remotely with clients. We use video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board to keep decisions visible across the time difference: IST is 5h30m ahead, or 4h30m during British Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store scope with you before work moves into design.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write theme code.
- 03
Access
You approve a collaborator account and choose its permissions. The store stays in your account, and you can remove that access.
- 04
Build
We work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while your live store continues trading.
- 05
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details so we can see what the store needs to hold and connect.
- Your Shopify account and plan, in the business’s own name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location.
- Product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review generated policy templates before use.
- A list of tools you use or plan to use, such as email marketing, accounting and couriers, with the job each must do.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work changes with the store’s design, catalogue, rules and existing data.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme takes less work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Extra product choices, metafield-driven specifications, bundles and made-to-order options add setup and theme work.
Business logic
Custom rules need development and testing. Custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs also need Shopify Plus.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Editing the live theme
A mistake is immediately visible to visitors. Duplicate the theme, make changes on the copy and preview it before publishing.
Skipping migration redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Using inconsistent product data
Agree how staff enter tags, product types and vendors. Automated collections and filters use those fields to place products.
Leaving demo content in place
Check policies, theme content and notification wording before launch, and replace placeholders with your own information.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Liverpool
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price for every store. The main drivers include a custom theme, the amount of customer and order data being migrated, and any custom discount or checkout rules that need building. We send a quote once the scope has been agreed with you.
Can I hire you to build a store my staff can run?
Yes. We build for first-time online sellers who want their own staff to manage the store without looking after hosting, security or software updates. At handover, we train your team to handle orders, products and discounts, so those routine tasks stay with your business.
Can you customise the Shopify checkout?
Yes, within the options available on your Shopify plan. Shopify runs the checkout itself, and standard checkout customisation is available from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus, so identify those requirements before selecting a plan.
How should I choose a payment gateway?
Compare the total cost per order across the gateways available to your business. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is also active. That comparison is particularly useful where Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business, before you settle on a gateway.
Will I own my store after launch?
You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep those assets under your business’s control and make sure the people responsible for the store know where to find them when they need to make changes.
What happens after the store launches?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built your store. You can also review conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers in Shopify’s reports, alongside organic clicks and product-page indexing in Search Console, to decide what to investigate next.
