Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom storefront?
An existing theme is a useful starting point when its layouts suit your products and the way customers shop. Customising it keeps the initial work lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more control over the brand and unusual product layouts, but later layout changes need development work. Consider who will maintain those changes before choosing the route.
For a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow, a headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js is another option. The trade-off is that you give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme might not work. It is worth checking the features your staff expect to edit before committing to that approach.
Checkout and payment choices need a separate review. Shopify runs checkout itself: standard customisation works from the Basic plan up, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. A third-party payment gateway also carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is active, so compare the total cost per order when choosing a gateway.
Local
What Newcastle upon Tyne organisations need from a store
Newcastle's economy includes retail and tourism. If you run a physical shop, an online store connected to Shopify's point-of-sale app can put online and in-store stock in one system. A growing direct-to-consumer brand may instead need a custom theme, subscriptions and reviews connected to its store data, with email flows built around that data.
The city also has two major universities. If you manage a university shop, think about how staff will organise products into collections as the catalogue changes. Manual collections let staff select each product; automated collections use conditions such as product type or tag, so they need consistent product data to stay current.
Rules
What a UK Shopify store needs to handle
Online customers in the UK must be told about their cancellation rights. We set up a returns policy page with that information as part of the store. If your business is a UK limited company, we also provide space on the site for its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status.
Marketing emails to individual customers need permission and an opt-out. We set up the email sign-up and unsubscribe route around those requirements, so you can collect permission and give recipients a way to stop further messages.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time; the shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across that difference.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store's scope with you before deciding what needs to be designed and built.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback, which we use to refine the designs before writing theme code.
- 03
Build
We work on an unpublished copy of the theme. You preview and approve the work before publication, while your existing live store keeps trading.
- 04
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.

Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work grows with the decisions and rules the store needs to support, from discounts to delivery and payment options.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme takes less work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and specifications driven by metafields add setup and theme work.
Business logic
Custom rules add development and testing; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs also need Shopify Plus.
Connected systems and markets
Stock and price synchronisation, translations and market-specific shipping rates add integration and configuration work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Skipping migration redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Adding an app for every small task
Review scripts and subscriptions before installing. Check theme files for leftover code when removing an app.
Using inconsistent tags, product types or vendors
Clean these fields before building automated collections and filters, so products do not appear in the wrong place or disappear.
Leaving demo wording live
Check placeholder policies and default notifications before launch, along with any remaining theme demo content.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Newcastle upon Tyne
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The work depends on the catalogue, the integrations you need and whether existing products, customers and orders must be moved. For example, a fourth product choice such as engraving needs theme properties or an app. We agree the scope with you before preparing a quote.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We design a custom theme around your brand and build it for speed on mobile. You can bring your product information and explain how customers need to choose and buy from you; that gives the design work a practical basis before the theme is built.
Should I use an app or commission custom code?
An app can add a feature quickly, while custom code or a custom app can fit a specific requirement. Compare the ongoing obligations: apps bring recurring fees, extra scripts and dependence on their maker; custom work needs maintenance as Shopify changes. Pick the route your team is prepared to maintain.
Will I own the store and control developer access?
Yes. The store stays in your account, and you own your domain, content and code. A developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove access at any time, so you retain control when the build is complete.
What happens after the store launches?
We provide ongoing support from the people who designed and built your store. You can also use Shopify reports to review conversion, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, and use Search Console to check organic clicks and product-page indexing. Review staff and collaborator access periodically too.
Can Shopify suit a first online store?
Yes. Shopify suits first-time online sellers who want staff to run the store without managing hosting, security or software updates. Before choosing what to build, identify who will maintain the catalogue and process orders, so the store and its handover support the way your team actually works.
