Choosing
Which Shopify setup should you choose?
Start with the features your customers need and the work your staff will do each day. Apps are a quick way to add features, but each choice brings a recurring fee, potentially more scripts and a dependency on its maker. Custom code or a custom app fits a specific requirement more closely; it also needs maintenance as Shopify changes. Weigh that ongoing work before adding a feature.
A headless storefront built with Hydrogen or Next.js suits a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. You give up the theme editor, though, and apps that add features through the theme might not work with that storefront. A theme-based store gives your team access to that editor, which is worth considering if staff expect to manage the presentation themselves.
For international selling, one store can use markets for local-currency prices, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit businesses that need different catalogues or teams in each country, or payouts in different currencies. The choice affects how much your staff manage across stores.
Local
What Chicago organisations need from a Shopify store
Chicago is a hub for commerce and technology. If you are a first-time seller in either field, you may want a store your own staff can run without managing hosting, security or software updates. Your collections also need a clear structure: automatic collections stay current when product tags, types, vendors or prices are consistent.
For a Chicago business selling from the Loop, a move from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform calls for products, customers and orders to be transferred, with redirects in place. That gives the migration a practical scope before design work begins.
Chicago is also home to universities, including the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Chicago. An education organisation selling into several countries can use one admin to manage local-currency prices, translated content and market-specific shipping.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
Sales tax settings need to reflect the markets where you sell: 45 US states and the District of Columbia levy a statewide sales tax, while the states named as exceptions do not. We configure the store’s tax settings for your market alongside shipping and payments.
If you send commercial email, including business-to-business email, it needs a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out, and opt-out requests must be honoured. We connect the store’s email flows with those requirements in mind and set up the address and opt-out in the messages.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m (Eastern) to 13h30m (Pacific) ahead of the mainland US in winter; the difference is one hour less during daylight saving time across most of the mainland. Shared boards keep decisions and feedback visible across the time difference.

Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The scope determines how much design, setup and testing work the store needs.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and specifications driven by metafields add setup and theme work.
Custom business rules
Extra logic needs development and testing. Public apps with Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Integrations and markets
Two-way stock and price sync, plus extra prices, translations and shipping rates, add work to connect and check.
Theme design
A custom theme needs design around your brand as well as development for mobile speed.
Avoid
Shopify mistakes to avoid
Missing redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Check what each app adds in scripts and subscriptions. When removing one, inspect the theme files for code it left behind.
Editing the live theme
Duplicate it, make changes on the copy and preview them before publishing, so a mistake does not appear immediately to visitors.
Leaving demo material in place
Check for placeholder policies, demo content and default notification wording before launch.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Chicago
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include how much data you migrate, the work involved in a custom theme, and the apps and integrations that need connecting and testing. Moving products alone is lighter than moving order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects as well. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Can I hire someone to build or move my Shopify store?
Yes. We move products, customers and orders from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, with redirects in place. We also provide training so your team can manage orders, products and discounts after handover. Bring details of the existing store and the work your staff need to do in the new one.
Should I customise an existing theme or commission a custom one?
An existing theme keeps setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme suits unusual products and a distinct brand, but later layout changes need development work. Consider how often your team expects to change layouts and how closely the available theme fits your products before deciding.
How should I choose a payment gateway?
Compare the total cost per order across the gateways available to your business. Payments through a third-party gateway carry an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is also active. That makes the gateway choice part of your store setup, especially if Shopify Payments is not available to your business.
Will I own the store and control developer access?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, and the store stays in your account. A developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose its permissions and can remove them at any time, so access remains under your control after the build.
What support is available after launch?
The people who designed and built your store provide ongoing support after launch. You can review Shopify reports for conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, and use Search Console to check organic clicks and product-page indexing. Review apps and access periodically too, removing anything no longer used.
