Choosing
Should you choose WordPress or a custom website?
WordPress suits a team that publishes often and wants to edit most of the site itself. Its choice of plugins gives you ways to add features, but someone needs to keep the software updated for security. Decide who will take that responsibility before choosing it.
A custom-coded site in Next.js suits a business that wants fast pages, tight security and a design without template limits. The trade-off is that you should be comfortable asking a developer to make structural changes. A custom design gives you room to address a particular brand, audience or set of content; an adapted template can fit a simpler brief when it is reworked around your actual copy and images.
Hosted builders such as Wix, Squarespace and Webflow suit a small site that an owner wants to run alone. You get less control over code and speed, and moving away can mean rebuilding the site. We recommend WordPress or Next.js after learning how your team works.
Local
What Chicago businesses need from a website
Chicago is a hub for finance and industry. A professional services firm needs distinct service and partner pages that help prospective clients check expertise before calling. A manufacturer needs capability or product pages, certifications and downloadable specifications, with a quote form that gathers enough detail for a useful response.
The Loop is a major central business district. For an appointment-based practice serving clients there, the site needs clear service pages, practitioner profiles and opening hours, with a booking or call option that works on a phone. Visitors should be able to see who they are contacting before they make an enquiry.
Chicago is home to the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and the University of Illinois Chicago. For a startup introducing a product to an audience connected with education, a plain explanation of the product and a way to join a waitlist or book a demo give visitors a clear next step.
Rules
What a US website needs to handle
For a business open to the public, US guidance says the ADA covers goods and services offered on the web and identifies WCAG as helpful guidance. Agree an accessibility target in the brief. We set up page designs against the agreed WCAG success criteria, so the target guides what gets built and reviewed. WCAG has levels A, AA and AAA; the W3C encourages use of its latest version.
How it runs
How a website project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time to 13h30m ahead of Pacific time in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives us a place to keep feedback and decisions visible across that difference.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We use that discussion to agree the scope with you.
- 02
Plan
Review wireframes for the content and order of each page. This is the point to settle priorities before discussing colours.
- 03
Build and test
We develop the site in code or with an editable CMS, then test it on real devices and browsers. Your team can check the pages as they take shape.
- 04
Check
Proofread every page, submit each form once and confirm who receives its messages before launch.
- 05
Launch and care
We handle domain, email, analytics and search setup, then provide ongoing support. Your team stays involved in the handover.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Content gathering can take longer than design approval, so decide early who will supply each item.
- Your logo in SVG, AI or EPS, plus brand colours and fonts, or a note that they need creating.
- A ranked list of services or products to feature.
- A site goal, such as quote requests or calls, and the person who handles each enquiry type.
- Real photos of your team, premises and finished work; book a photo shoot ahead if needed.
- Case studies, testimonials, certifications and client logos you have permission to show.
- Account details for your domain, hosting, email, analytics and Search Console, or the name of the person who holds them.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
Start by identifying who buys from you and what you want visitors to do on the site.
Features
Booking, calculators, member logins, multiple languages or a CRM connection add design, build and testing work.
Content readiness
Copy and photos ready to publish keep the work smaller; copywriting, photography or translation add to the scope.
Migration
Moving blog posts, news archives and downloadable files from an existing site adds transfer and checking work.
Brand readiness
An existing logo and style guide reduce design effort compared with deciding the logo, colours and typefaces during the project.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when commissioning a website
Choosing a platform too early
First decide who will update the site and how often; use those editing needs to guide the choice.
Leaving accounts in an agency’s name
Hold the domain and hosting accounts in your business’s name and grant access to the people doing the work.
Approving desktop pages alone
Review every page on a phone as well, including the information and actions visitors need.
Leaving search setup until launch
Check page titles, the sitemap and any development indexing block before the site goes live.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Chicago
Page updated 5 November 2026
Is a website still worth building for my business?
A website gives you a place to explain your services and measure enquiries. Keep the page list focused on what visitors need, instead of copying every page from an old site or a competitor. Track form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks in analytics, and check which pages those enquiries started from.
How much does it cost to have a website built?
There is no fixed price: the sitemap and page designs, development approach and content editor all shape the scope. Agree what the site needs before comparing a proposal. Ask us for a free quote once the scope is agreed, and identify who will own each part of the work.
Can a custom site still have an editor?
Yes. A custom Next.js site can include an editor, while WordPress suits teams that make frequent content changes themselves. We recommend an approach after understanding how your team works, so tell us which people will make edits and what they expect to change without developer help.
What is included in the website work?
The work includes forms, search setup and a launch handover. We set up metadata, structured data and a sitemap, along with domain, email, analytics and Search Console. At handover, we walk your team through the site. We also build on your existing logo, colours and fonts and prepare brand assets for the web where needed.
Will I own the website and be able to update it?
Yes. You own the domain, content and code, with no lock-in. We provide an editor for pages, news, projects and careers that your team can use without training. Name someone to keep posts current after launch, so visitors see an active picture of your business.
How will website enquiries reach my team?
Contact and quote forms are routed to the right inbox, with WhatsApp and click-to-call options available. Agree who receives quote requests and what the confirmation message should say as part of the build. Also decide whether the mobile pages should show WhatsApp or click-to-call buttons.
