Choosing
Should you choose a cross-platform app or a native app?
For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content, a cross-platform framework lets you share most of the code across iOS and Android. We usually use React Native, with native modules where a feature needs them. It uses the interface components of each platform, and developers who work with JavaScript or TypeScript can contribute. Some logic can also be shared with a React web app.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded app where you want screens to look identical across platforms. Your team would need to be comfortable working in Dart. We go native when the app needs deep device features.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool if store listings are not essential. It skips store review, but it will not appear in the stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen.
Local
What Pittsburgh organisations need from an app
Pittsburgh has large medical providers as well as a wider healthcare sector. A clinic planning an appointment app needs booking, reminders and payments for patients, plus a staff view of the day's schedule. Those staff screens deserve space in the project scope alongside the patient screens.
The city's technology sector includes businesses whose customers already use a web platform. When those customers use the service frequently, an app can share the existing accounts, data and backend, giving staff and customers a consistent place to work with that information.
Education is also a focus in the city. A team launching a new consumer or marketplace product needs coverage on both app stores and analytics that show whether people come back, so it has useful information after release.
Rules
What a US app project has to handle
A business in the United States can sign up for Stripe to accept payments. We set up the payment gateway connection and test how it handles failures. We also set up in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. On Google Play, digital goods and subscriptions sold in the app use Play billing, while physical goods and services such as event tickets do not. Some regions allow alternative billing, so what you sell shapes the checkout settings.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter, with a shorter gap during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback for the work ahead.

Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We use that discussion to agree the scope with you before design begins.
- 02
Design
We design the iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Review the screens with the people who will use them.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback can reveal changes while a screen is still cheaper to alter than a built feature.
- 04
Build and test
Try builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Share what happens in real use, including anything that is difficult to complete.
- 05
Release
We handle the store listings, submission and release. You review the listing information with the app's intended users in mind.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the following to make the scope discussion more useful.
- Write a short list of what users must do in the first release, in the order they would do it.
- Start registering developer accounts in your company's name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number for verification.
- Identify testers if you are using a new personal Google Play developer account, which requires a closed test before production.
- Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data your app collects, for the app and its Apple listing.
- Plan a working demo account and live backend for Apple submission if your app has a login.
- Record the data collected by any analytics or advertising SDK for Google Play's Data safety form.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The work changes with the systems and features your app needs.
Backend and admin
An existing backend with a documented API reduces the work; building both from scratch adds a substantial part of the project.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Screen design
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts need filtering, reporting, blocking and contact details, which adds moderation work.
Notifications
A sending service needs audience and timing rules, plus settings for the categories users want to switch off.

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The scope of the phone app, the backend and the staff admin panel all affect the work. Offline use is another major choice: showing previously loaded data is more modest than letting users edit records without a signal and resolving conflicts when those records sync.
How should I choose an app development company?
Ask how the proposed app gives people a reason to install it and how the team handles sign-in. Apple says an app should offer more than a repackaged website, and apps without significant account-based features should let people use them without logging in. Discuss those decisions before agreeing the scope.
What is included beyond the app screens?
Plan for analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Tools such as Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics or Sentry can show which screens people use, where they give up and which devices crash. That gives you practical information to review after customers start using the app.
Will we own the app and its accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business's name too; accounts held by an agency or freelancer make the app harder to move later. We handle store submission and review under your own developer accounts.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features after release. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out through an over-the-air update, but native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Google Play also requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level.
