Choosing

Should you choose cross-platform, native or a web app?

A cross-platform app shares most of its code across iOS and Android. It suits products built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments, maps or content. We usually use React Native, which renders each platform’s own interface components. It gives your app a shared codebase, with native modules where a feature needs them. Some logic can also be shared with a React web app.

Flutter is another cross-platform option. It draws its own interface, so it suits a heavily branded app whose screens need to look identical across both platforms. Your team will need to work in Dart. A progressive web app is another route for a staff tool: it skips store review, though it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can only request notification permission after someone adds it to the Home Screen.

The right choice starts with the work the app needs to do. We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you before design begins.

Local

What Darwin businesses need from an app

Darwin’s Wharf Precinct includes retail and entertainment outlets alongside a convention and exhibition centre. For a shop or restaurant serving repeat customers, an app can put reordering, loyalty and saved payment details within reach. The checkout needs to be quick, and notifications need to arrive at a useful point in the customer’s activity.

Darwin’s port is expected to grow with continued expansion in trade with Asia. A business serving those customers that already has a frequently used web platform could give them an app using the same accounts, data and backend. That gives customers a way to use the service on their phones without creating a separate set of account records for staff to manage.

Rules

What an app project in Australia needs to handle

Australian guidance recommends WCAG 2.2 at a minimum of Level AA for equal access to digital goods and services. We use that target when setting up the app’s screen designs and flows, so accessibility is part of the design work.

The removal of surcharging on debit, prepaid and credit card payments across the eftpos, Mastercard and Visa networks affects checkout settings. We set up the checkout without those card surcharges and include the payment flow in the build.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 4 hours behind Darwin, so the shared board gives both sides a place to record decisions and feedback across the time difference.

  1. 01

    Design

We prepare screens for iOS and Android. You review and refine them with us before code is written.

  2. 02

    Prototype

Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you change a screen before it is built.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We send test builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use them for the tasks your customers will actually perform, then share what needs attention.

  4. 04

    Prepare for review

If your app has a login, provide a working demo account and a live backend for submission. Leave room in the launch plan for fixes and resubmission.

  5. 05

    Submit

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring what you know about the tasks, systems and accounts involved.

  • First releaseList the actions users must complete, in the order they will do them.
  • Existing systemsNote your website, CRM, booking or payment software, whether each has an API, and who holds admin access.
  • Staff tasksNote who will edit content, look up customers, issue refunds or block abusive accounts.
  • Developer accountsStart registering Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
  • TestingFor a new personal Google Play developer account, plan a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for at least 14 days.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timing of app development

The scope determines how much design, build and testing work is needed.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even with a shared backend.

  • Integrations

Payments, maps, booking systems and hardware each add setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Screen variations

Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • User-generated content

Reporting, filtering, blocking and published contact details add moderation work.

  • Existing backend

A documented API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel can be as substantial as the app itself.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building an app

  • Wrapping a website in an app shell

Give people useful app functionality beyond the existing site, since a repackaged website risks rejection.

  • Putting sign-up first

Let people see and use the app before login when it has no significant account-based features.

  • Asking for notifications at launch

Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, users must allow notifications before they are enabled.

  • Adding an SDK without updating privacy answers

Include data collected by third-party SDKs in Google Play’s Data safety form.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Darwin

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price: the scope determines the work. The amount of offline functionality, the backend and data your app needs, and purchases or subscriptions are useful starting points. Showing previously loaded data offline is a smaller job than allowing edits without a signal and resolving conflicts when records sync.

How do I choose an app development company?

Choose a company that can explain how your app will work with the systems you already use and how you will see what happens after release. We build a shared backend for apps, websites and admin tools. Analytics and crash reporting show which screens people use, where they stop and which devices crash.

When should I choose a native app?

A native app fits products that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. The trade-off is separate codebases to build and maintain. Ask what the feature needs from the device and how that affects the work across iPhone and Android.

What is included beyond the app screens?

The work includes push notifications and store listings, submission and release. Account deletion also needs to be planned if people can create accounts: Apple requires a way to start deletion inside the app, while Google Play also requires a web link where users can request deletion of their account and associated data.

Who owns the app code?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Ask for the code and relevant account details as part of your handover, and make sure the people responsible for the product know where those materials are held. That gives you a clear starting point for future work.

What support does the app need after launch?

Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, so regular maintenance releases belong in the plan. Review retention, task drop-off and the crash-free rate to see how people use each release and where it needs attention.
