Choosing
Should you choose a cross-platform or native app?
Cross-platform development suits apps built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments and content. React Native shares most of the code between iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Web developers can contribute, and some logic can be shared with a React website. That gives you a practical route if your app needs to serve customers on both platforms.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded app where you want screens to look identical across platforms. Your development team needs to work in Dart, so consider who will maintain the app as well as how it should look.
Native development fits deeper device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. It uses Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android, leaving you with two codebases to build and maintain. We generally choose React Native for apps, and go native when the device features make that the better fit. We’ll discuss the work your app needs to do before settling on an approach.
Local
What Chester organisations need from an app
Tourism, retail, public administration and financial services all have a place in Chester’s economy. For a local organisation taking appointments, a useful app could let customers book, receive reminders and pay, while giving staff a view of the day’s schedule. The staff view needs to be planned alongside the customer screens, so the people handling bookings can use it in their daily work.
Chester’s shopping area includes the Rows, an indoor market and indoor shopping centres. A shop with repeat customers could use an app for reordering, loyalty and saved payment details, with a checkout that is quick to use. We also set up targeted push notifications for customers who want to hear from you.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time; the shared board gives you a place to leave feedback between conversations.
- 01
Discover and design
We learn about your business, audience and goals, agree the scope with you, then refine the screen designs with your feedback before writing code.
- 02
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback gives us a chance to change screens before they are built.
- 03
Test
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks, so you can try the app and tell us what needs attention.
- 04
Account controls
If users can create accounts, we build an in-app deletion path and a web link for deletion requests to meet the store requirements.
- 05
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You remain involved as the app moves towards release.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the following where they apply to your app.
- A short list of first-release tasks, in the order users will do them.
- Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- A privacy policy that reflects the data your app collects.
- A working demo account and live backend for submission if the app has a login.
- A plan for closed testing if you have a new personal Google Play developer account.
- Details of any analytics or advertising software in the app, for the Google Play Data safety form.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline?
The work grows with the flows, connections and screens you need.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions.
Integrations
A payment gateway, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and failure handling.
Interface
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
Existing systems
A documented API for an existing backend reduces the work needed to connect the app.
Live features
Tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Chester
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The scope of the backend and staff admin panel is a major driver, as is offline work: showing previously loaded data takes less work than allowing offline edits that sync later with conflict handling. We send a free quote once we’ve agreed the scope with you.
Should we build an app if we already have a website?
An app is worth considering when customers use your existing web platform frequently. We can build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools, keeping customer accounts and data in one place. Start by identifying the task customers return to most often and how they would complete it on a phone.
How do push notifications work?
We set up a sending service, rules for who receives each message and in-app settings for notification categories. Ask for permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.
Who owns the app and its accounts?
You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in. Keep developer accounts, signing access and the code repository in your business’s name as well. Accounts held in an agency’s or freelancer’s name can make the app difficult to move if you later change who maintains it.
What support is needed after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, so maintenance releases need to remain on your list. Track returning users, drop-off in the main task and the crash-free rate to help assess releases.
