What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?

We usually use React Native to share a codebase across iOS and Android. It suits apps built around accounts, bookings, forms, lists, maps, payments and content. Where a feature needs access to a particular device capability, we add a native module. This gives you shared app code while leaving room for platform-specific work.

Native development is worth considering when your product depends on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features as they launch. The trade-off is more maintenance: an iPhone app built in Swift and an Android app built in Kotlin have two separate codebases.

A progressive web app can suit a staff tool and avoids store review. It does not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them, though, and on iPhone it can request notification permission only after someone adds it to their Home Screen. We help you choose an approach with design, development and launch handled by the same team.

Local

What Cambridge organisations need from an app

Kendall Square has a high concentration of startups. If you are launching a consumer product or marketplace there, an app for both stores and analytics showing whether people return give you a way to see how the product is being used. Think about the main task you want someone to complete each time they open it, then use that task to guide the screen flow.

Biotechnology businesses are concentrated in Kendall Square and East Cambridge. If your business already runs a web platform that customers use frequently, an app can reuse its accounts, data and backend. Plan for staff access too: an admin panel gives your team a place to edit content and look up customers without asking a developer to make each change.

Rules

What a US mobile app project has to handle

If you are building an app for a state or local government organisation, its mobile app needs to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the ADA Title II rule. We set up the screen design work against that standard and include accessibility in the scope from the start. Tell us which organisation will own the app, so the requirement is part of the design discussion before screens are built.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less ahead during daylight saving time. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across the time difference.

    Discover

we learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you.

  2. 02

    Design

we prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code.

  3. 03

    Prototype

put the clickable screens in front of a few customers or staff. Changes are less expensive at this stage than after the screens are built.

  4. 04

    Test

we send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks, so you can give feedback from real use.

  5. 05

    Notifications

we plan the permission request for a point where its benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.

  6. 06

    Store privacy

we check that Google Play's Data safety answers cover data collected by third-party SDKs, including any analytics or advertising SDK added to the app.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring these details to the first discussion so we can agree what the app needs.

  • A short list of what users must do in the first release, ordered by how they will do it.
  • The website, CRM, booking, ERP or payment systems involved, plus their API details and who holds admin access.
  • Apple and Google developer accounts in your company's name. Organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number, so start registration early.
  • A closed-test plan if you have a new personal Google Play accountat least 12 testers must opt in for at least 14 days before production release.
  • For an app with login, a working demo account and live backend for Apple submission, with room in the launch plan for fixes and resubmission.

Cost & time

What affects app development cost and time

The work grows with the flows, systems and data your app needs to support.

  • User roles

customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.

  • Integrations

a payment gateway, booking system or hardware connection adds setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Existing backend

a documented API can reduce the work; building a backend and admin panel from scratch adds a substantial part of the project.

  • Live features

tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Cambridge

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have an app developed?

There is no fixed price. Offline editing with later syncing takes more work than showing the last loaded data, while user-generated content needs moderation features such as reporting and blocking. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed, so bring the tasks and content you expect the app to handle.

Which company should I choose to build my app?

Choose a team that can explain what the app will offer beyond your existing website and how people will reach useful content. Apple warns against repackaged websites, and apps without significant account-based features should let people use them without logging in. Ask a prospective developer how those points affect your proposed screens.

What is included beyond the app screens?

Notifications and account deletion need work behind the screens. We set up a notification sending service, delivery rules and settings for notification categories. For apps with account creation, Apple requires an in-app deletion path; Google Play also requires an in-app path and a web link for deletion requests.

Will I own the app and its store accounts?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. That means the accounts used for publication belong to you, while we work with you on the release through those accounts.

What happens after the app launches?

Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release. Track returning users, drop-off in the main task and crash-free rate to assess releases.
