Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform or native app?
We usually build with React Native. It gives you a shared codebase for iOS and Android, while native modules handle features that need them. That suits a product you want to maintain across both platforms without treating each as a separate build. Flutter is another cross-platform option: it uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a highly customised visual design if your team is comfortable working in that language.
A native build fits deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. The trade-off is separate Swift and Kotlin codebases to build and maintain. A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool: it skips store review, although it needs packaging to appear in app stores. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. We look at the features you need when choosing the approach.

What Aberdeen organisations might need from an app
For an Aberdeen business working in undersea petroleum technology, a staff app may need to show information when a connection is unavailable. Decide how far offline work should go: displaying the last loaded data is a smaller task than letting staff edit records and resolving conflicts when they sync.
The University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University have audiences that may already use online platforms. Where use is frequent, an app could share the platform’s existing accounts, data and backend.
For an organisation such as the James Hutton Institute, which carries out agricultural and soil research in Aberdeen, a mobile project also needs a plan for administration. That means considering the backend and a panel where authorised staff can manage content and accounts.
Rules
What a UK app project needs to handle
UK data protection rules govern personal data, so the app’s privacy information needs to reflect what it actually collects. We identify the data involved in the app and set up a link to your privacy policy inside it and in its store listing. You will need a policy that matches the finished product. Apple requires both links, so have that text ready for the listing as well as the app screens.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across that difference.

Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We use that conversation to agree the scope with you before moving into design.
- 02
Design
We prepare screens for iOS and Android and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can review how the screens support the tasks in scope.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you change a screen while it is still less costly to alter than a built feature.
- 04
Test
Try development builds on your own phone through TestFlight on iPhone or the internal or closed testing tracks on Google Play. Tell us what you find in real use.
- 05
Release
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You keep the accounts in your organisation’s hands.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the essentials first; the discussion can start with a short list.
- First releaseList what users must do, in the order they will do it.
- Developer accountsStart registering them in your company’s name and check the D-U-N-S requirement for organisation accounts.
- Google Play testingCheck the closed-test requirement if you plan to use a new personal developer account.
- AccessIdentify what people should be able to try before creating an account.
- Privacy answersList any analytics or advertising SDKs planned for the app so their data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline?
The work changes with the features, connections and screens you ask the app to support.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and extra backend work.
Integrations
A payment gateway, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and failure handling.
Screen variations
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts or other user-generated material need filtering, reporting and blocking tools, plus published contact details.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Aberdeen
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to have an app developed?
There is no fixed price. Separate flows and permissions for customers, drivers or staff add screens, while push notifications need a sending service, audience rules and settings for the categories users can switch off. We agree the scope with you so a quote can reflect the work involved.
How do I choose an app development company?
Ask how the team will make the app useful on a phone and how it will handle sign-in. A shell around an existing website risks store rejection. If the product has no significant account-based features, Apple’s guidelines ask that people can use it without logging in.
What is included in the app build?
We build the app and can provide a shared backend for your website and admin tools, along with push notifications, in-app purchases and subscriptions. If users can create an account, deletion needs a route inside the app; Google Play also requires a web link for deletion requests.
Will I own the app after it is built?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. When reviewing a proposal, check that ownership is clear for each of those items and that you will be able to take them with you if you decide to work with another provider later.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for maintenance releases and check how people use the app. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Retention and crash-free rate help you see where people return, leave the main task or encounter a problem after a release.
