See the serviceWhat it does
Get the og image size right before you publish: drop in an image or type its dimensions, and the checker compares it with what Open Graph (used by Facebook, Slack and Discord), X, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Pinterest expect. For each platform it checks the minimum dimensions, the file size limit and the aspect ratio. It then tells you whether the image fits, will be cropped at the edges or is too small. A shape preview shows your image's proportions against the standard 1.91:1 frame. The file is read on your device only.
How to use it
- Drop in the image you plan to use, or type its width, height and file size.
- Read the aspect ratio. 1.91:1 is the Open Graph standard.
- Check each platform's verdict in the table.
- Fix any red row by resizing or recropping the image, then check it again.
- Set the final image in your og:image tag and test the link in each platform's own preview tool.
How to read the result
Aspect ratio is width divided by height. Platforms is how many of the five accept the image without a red verdict. In the table, green means it fits, amber means a slightly different ratio so a sliver of the edges will be cropped, and red means too small, too heavy or the wrong shape.
The default 1200 × 630 image at 180 KB scores 4 of 5. It fits Open Graph, LinkedIn and WhatsApp. X wants 2:1, and 1.90:1 is close enough to show with a thin crop, so it gets amber. Pinterest wants a tall 2:3 pin and marks it as the wrong shape.
A square 1080 × 1080 image, by contrast, scores 0 of 5. It is the wrong shape for every link preview, and at 1,080 pixels wide it is also below the 1,200-pixel minimum LinkedIn recommends. Platforms would crop the top and bottom off, often cutting through a headline.
Write the tags themselves with the Open Graph generator. Share previews are one of the checks in our technical SEO audits.
Questions
Frequently asked.
What is the best OG image size?
1200 by 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio. Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord and WhatsApp all display it without awkward cropping, and X shows it with only a sliver trimmed. Keep the file under 300 KB so WhatsApp shows it, and keep text away from the edges in case a platform crops tighter.
Why is my old image still showing after I changed it?
Platforms cache link previews, often for days. Change the image file name so the URL is new, then ask each platform to fetch the page again: the Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector both have a button for that. X and WhatsApp refresh on their own schedule.
Can I use one image for every platform?
For link previews, yes. A 1200 by 630 image works on every platform here except Pinterest, which favours tall 2:3 pins. If Pinterest matters to you, add a separate tall image inside the article for people to pin rather than changing the Open Graph image.
