Halving the page weight halves this bill. Compressing images is usually the cheapest fix; see the image compressor.

A bandwidth cost calculator turns page size and traffic into gigabytes and money. Enter your average page weight, monthly page views and the share served from browser cache. You see the monthly and yearly transfer, the cost on the host you choose and the cost per thousand views. A table compares the same traffic across several CDNs and hosting platforms using their published per-gigabyte rates and included allowances, last checked October 2026. Plan fees are left out so you compare transfer alone.
How to use it
- Enter the average transferred page weight in KB. Chrome DevTools or the page weight calculator gives you this.
- Enter monthly page views from your analytics.
- Set the share served from cache. Repeat visitors reuse images, CSS and scripts.
- Pick your host or CDN, or choose Custom and enter your own price and allowance.
- Read the table to see what the same traffic would cost elsewhere.
How to read the result
Transfer per month is the data your site sends. Monthly cost applies your provider's price per gigabyte after any included allowance. Per 1,000 views divides that by traffic, which makes sites of different sizes comparable.
With the defaults, a 1,500 KB page viewed 50,000 times a month with 30% cached transfers about 50 GB. At $0.085 per GB that would be about $4.26 a month, but the selected CloudFront rate includes 1 TB a month, so the transfer bill is zero. Scale the same page to 2 million views and transfer reaches about 2,000 GB. At $0.085 per GB with no allowance that is about $170 a month; with a 1 TB allowance, about $83.
The cheapest change is usually the page itself. Cutting it from 1,500 KB to 750 KB halves the transfer and, once you are past any free allowance, cuts the bill by at least half, whichever provider you use.
Work out the page size first with the page weight calculator. Keeping hosting costs and page weight in check month to month is part of our website maintenance plans.
Questions
Frequently asked.
How much bandwidth does a website use?
Page weight times page views, minus what browsers serve from their cache. A 1.5 MB page viewed 50,000 times a month with 30 percent served from cache transfers about 50 GB. Add downloads, video and API traffic separately, since they are not part of normal page views.
Why is my real bill different?
Providers price by region, charge for requests as well as gigabytes, and bundle allowances into plan fees that this calculator leaves out. Bots and crawlers also add traffic that never appears in your analytics. Treat the result as an estimate of the transfer part of the bill, and check your provider's usage page for the actual figure.
Is bandwidth really free on some hosts?
Some, such as Cloudflare's CDN plans, do not charge per gigabyte for normal website traffic, and many shared hosts advertise unmetered bandwidth. Both come with fair-use terms. Large file downloads or video can still be throttled or moved to a paid product, so read the terms before relying on it.
