Choosing
Which Shopify setup should you choose?
An app is a quick way to add a feature, but it can bring recurring fees, extra scripts and reliance on its maker. Custom code or a custom app can fit a more specific requirement; your team then needs to maintain it as Shopify changes. List what each feature needs to do before deciding how to add it.
If you sell across countries, one store can manage markets with local-currency prices, translations and international domains. Separate stores suit you if each country needs its own catalogue or team, or if you need payouts in different currencies. Also check payment gateway costs: a third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is active.
A headless storefront using Hydrogen or Next.js suits a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow. The trade-off is that you give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through the theme may not work. That is a significant choice if your staff expect to edit the storefront themselves.
Local
What London organisations need from a store
London's tourism businesses selling products need a store staff can operate alongside their physical shop. Shopify's point-of-sale app can bring online and in-store stock into one system, giving staff a shared place to manage stock.
A growing direct-to-consumer brand among London's technology companies might need a faster custom theme, with subscriptions, reviews and email flows connected to store data. Those connections shape which apps and integrations the build needs.
London's universities and colleges selling online for the first time may want a store their own staff can run without managing hosting, security or software updates. The handover needs to leave those staff comfortable with the day-to-day work.
Rules
What a UK Shopify store has to handle
For UK online sales, customers need to be told about their right to cancel after delivery. We set up the relevant policy page using the returns information you provide, so the cancellation terms are available to buyers.
If you run a UK limited company, your website needs to show its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status. We set up space for those details on the site; you supply the correct company information.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work across the time difference using shared project boards, with your feedback and decisions recorded there for the build. IST is 5h30m ahead, or 4h30m during British Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. This gives both sides a clear basis for the work.
- 02
Design
We prepare desktop and mobile page designs. You review them and give feedback before we write theme code.
- 03
Access
The store stays in your account. You approve a collaborator account, choose its permissions and can remove them.
- 04
Build
We work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while the live store keeps trading.
- 05
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We place a real test order and refund it.
- 06
Handover
Your staff learn to run orders, products and discounts themselves before the store is handed over.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the material below so we can understand the store and its day-to-day needs.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business's name, with your own billing.
- Consistent product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, along with reviewed shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies.
- A list of current or planned tools, such as reviews, subscriptions and accounting, with what each must do.
- For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The scope determines the work involved and how long it takes.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is smaller work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Extra product options, specification fields, bundles and made-to-order choices add setup and theme work.
Business logic
Custom rules add development and testing. Public apps with Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Integrations and markets
Two-way stock and price sync adds work, as do extra markets with their own prices, translations and shipping rates.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Map old URLs to their new Shopify paths and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Check what each app adds. Apps can load scripts and leave code behind, so inspect theme files when uninstalling one.
Editing the live theme
Duplicate it, make changes on the copy and preview them before publishing.
Leaving demo content in place
Check for placeholder policies and default notification wording before launch.
Questions
Asked by businesses in London
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the theme, the detail your catalogue needs and the integrations you want connected. For example, dimensions or care instructions in metafields need a place in the theme. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Can I hire you to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We can build the store and connect the tools it needs. For example, automated collections can select products by tag, product type, vendor or price; they stay current when your product data is consistent. That gives your staff a defined way to keep collections up to date.
How much can I change at checkout?
Shopify runs checkout itself. Standard checkout customisation works from the Basic plan up, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. Functions can also change logic such as discount types, delivery options or blocking an order that breaks a rule.
What search work is included in the build?
We build lean pages with optimised images, clean structure, metadata and structured data. The aim is a store that loads quickly and is ready for search. Product URLs and structured data are part of the build, so those details are considered from launch.
Who owns the store after handover?
You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep access under review as your staff and suppliers change: remove unused staff and collaborator access, and review installed apps from time to time.
Can you support the store after launch?
Yes. Ongoing support comes from the people who designed and built the store. You can use Shopify reports to review conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, and use Search Console to check organic clicks and product-page indexing.
