Choosing
Should you choose cross-platform, native or a web app?
Cross-platform is a practical choice for an app centred on accounts, bookings, forms, maps or content. React Native shares most code across iOS and Android, reducing the amount you maintain. We use native development when the product needs deep device features. That gives you access to those features, with separate codebases to build and maintain.
Flutter is another cross-platform option. It uses Dart and draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded design that needs to look alike across platforms. Your team needs to be comfortable working in Dart. A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool: it skips store review, though it needs packaging to appear in the stores, and iPhone notification requests depend on adding it to the Home Screen.
Start with what people need to do. We learn about your audience and goals, then agree the scope with you before design begins.
Local
What Victoria organisations need from an app
Tourism is a chief industry in Victoria. Shops and restaurants serving repeat customers could use an app for reordering, loyalty and saved payment details, with a checkout that is quick to use. Appointment businesses need a different flow: booking, reminders and payments for the customer, plus a view of the day's schedule for staff.
Education organisations include the University of Victoria and Camosun College. An organisation whose users already visit a web platform frequently could consider an app that reuses the same accounts, data and backend. That gives users a mobile route into an existing service without asking staff to maintain a separate set of accounts.
Rules
What a mobile app project in Canada has to handle
Payment design starts with what you sell. For digital content, features or subscriptions used in the app, Apple requires in-app purchase and Google Play requires its billing system, with some regional alternatives. We set up in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores. For physical goods or services used outside the app, we set up another payment route; Stripe is available to businesses in Canada.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 12h30m ahead of British Columbia, so the shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and follow decisions across the time difference.
- 01
Design
We design the iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can check the flow against the tasks your users need to complete.
- 02
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you change a screen while it is still cheaper to change than a built screen.
- 03
Test
Try development builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Give us feedback from using the app, not just from looking at screen designs.
- 04
Submit
We handle store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts, so the release is connected to accounts you control.
- 05
Measure
Include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Screen usage, drop-off and device crashes give you specific places to investigate after people start using the app.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring what you have, and use these points to organise the discussion.
- List the actions users need in the first release, in the order they will do them.
- Note the website, booking system, CRM or payment provider the app must connect to, and who holds access.
- Start registering your developer accounts in the company's name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- Check the closed-testing requirement if you plan to use a new personal Google Play developer account.
- Plan a working demo account and live backend for submission if the app has a login.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and work involved
The scope changes both the build work and the testing needed.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that request data.
Screen design
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posting content brings moderation work, including reporting, blocking and filtering tools.
Existing systems
A documented backend API reduces work; a new backend and admin panel can be as large a task as the app.
Questions

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The app screens, backend and staff admin panel all affect the scope, as do notification rules and in-app purchases. For notifications, we need to account for the sending service, who receives each message and the settings people use to switch categories off.
How should I choose an app development company?
Ask how the developer will give people a reason to use the app and how they will handle sign-in. Apple asks apps without significant account-based features to allow use without a login, and a website wrapped in an app shell risks rejection. Discuss those choices before committing to a build.
Can the app share accounts with my website?
Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. If people can create an account, plan the deletion flow too: Apple requires a way to start deletion inside the app, while Google Play also requires a web link for deletion requests.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep track of the people in your business who have access to those assets, so you can manage them and make decisions about future work on the product.
What happens after the app launches?
Plan for maintenance releases and check how people use the app. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air, while native changes need a store release. Retention and crash-free rate help you assess releases.
