Choosing

Should you build a native or cross-platform app?

For an app centred on accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content, a cross-platform build is worth considering. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while using each platform’s interface components. Native modules handle features that need them. This gives you a shared foundation to maintain, and developers familiar with JavaScript or TypeScript can contribute. Some logic can also be shared with a React website.

A native build fits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android give you separate codebases, which also means separate code to build and maintain. A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool: it skips store review, but does not appear in the stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after being added to the Home Screen. Your choice affects both the work involved and how people access the product.

Local

What Vancouver organisations need from an app

Vancouver has high-tech and service-industry employers. For a shop or restaurant serving repeat customers, an app could put reordering, loyalty and saved payment details in one place. A fast checkout gives customers a clear route through the order, while well-timed notifications give them a reason to return. We would look at the repeat task first and design the screens around it.

The Port of Vancouver serves ocean-going vessels and barges. For delivery teams working on jobs connected with that activity, an app could collect forms, photos, signatures and location, then sync the records to the office when signal returns. The team needs to be able to complete the job even when a connection is unavailable.

Rules

What a US app project has to handle

A state or local government app needs to account for the ADA Title II rule. We set up the screen designs with WCAG 2.1 Level AA as the specification for that work. For checkout, we set up in-app purchases where Apple requires them for digital content, features or subscriptions; physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment method. Stripe is an available option for US businesses accepting payments.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 13h30m ahead of Pacific time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals. You help us agree what belongs in the scope.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare screens for iOS and Android. You review them and give feedback before code is written.

  3. 03

    Build and test

We develop the product and test it on real devices and browsers. You review the work as it takes shape.

  4. 04

    Prepare for review

If the app has a login, you provide a working demo account and a live backend for submission. Leave room in the launch plan for a fix and resubmission if needed.

  5. 05

    Submit

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring enough detail to show us the task your users need to complete.

  • List the actions users must take in the first release, in the order they would take them.
  • Note the website, booking system, CRM or payment provider involved, including API availability and who holds admin access.
  • Start registering developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • Check the closed-test requirement if you plan to use a new personal Google Play developer account.
  • Identify customers or staff who could try a clickable prototype and give feedback.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline?

The work grows with the flows, connections and content the app needs to support.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence require persistent connections and additional backend work.

  • Integrations

Each payment gateway, booking system or device adds setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Screen design

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • User content

Posting features need moderation, including reporting and blocking tools and published contact details.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Vancouver

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have an app developed?

There is no fixed price. Cost depends on the work the app has to do: for example, saving edits offline and resolving sync conflicts takes more work than showing previously loaded data. Targeted notifications also need a sending service, delivery rules and user settings. Once the scope is agreed, we send you a free quote.

How do I choose an app development company?

Choose a team that can explain the decisions behind the screens and permissions you are buying. Ask when it would request notification permission and what a customer can do before signing up. For example, asking after an order gives the notification request a clear context; apps without significant account-based features should let people use them without logging in.

What is included beyond the app screens?

An app project usually includes a backend and an admin panel as well as the phone app. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping accounts and data in one place. For an app that permits account creation, plan an in-app account deletion path and a web deletion-request link for Google Play.

Who owns the app and its code?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repository in your business’s name too. That makes it easier to move the app later without having to recover access from a freelancer or agency.

What support is available after launch?

Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. After release, look at retention and where people leave the main task, alongside the crash-free rate. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air, while native code or permission changes still need a store release.
