Choosing
Should you build a native or cross-platform app?
For an app built around bookings, accounts, forms, maps or payments, a cross-platform build is often a practical choice. React Native shares most of the code between iOS and Android, while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Its JavaScript or TypeScript code also gives web developers a way to contribute; some logic can be shared with a React website.
Native development fits an app that needs deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. That means building and maintaining separate Swift and Kotlin codebases. We usually use React Native and add native modules where a feature needs them, but we go native when the product calls for deeper device access.
A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It avoids store review, though it will not appear in app stores unless packaged for them. On iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to their Home Screen.
Local
What San Antonio organisations need from an app
San Antonio’s tourism and business services include organisations serving repeat customers. A restaurant or shop planning an app needs a quick route to reordering, saved payment details and loyalty features, with notifications timed around a useful customer action.
The South Texas Medical Center includes hospitals and clinics. For an appointment-based practice, the app plan needs to cover booking, reminders and payments alongside a staff view of the day’s schedule. That gives staff a practical way to manage what customers arrange on their phones.
San Antonio also has automobile manufacturing. For a manufacturer considering a staff app, decide what should happen when a connection drops. Showing previously loaded information takes less work than allowing records to be edited offline and resolving conflicts when they sync.
Rules
What a United States app project needs to handle
For a state or local government app, the build needs to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the US accessibility rule. We set up a review of the app’s screens against that standard as part of the design work, so accessibility is considered while screens are being refined. Every app also needs a privacy policy linked from its Apple store listing and from inside the app. We include those links in the release work; your policy should match the information your app collects.
How it runs
How a mobile app project runs with us
We work remotely from India, using video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 10h30m to 13h30m ahead of the mainland US in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback across that difference.
- 01
Design
We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can check the flow while changes are still on the screen designs.
- 02
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff. Their feedback helps you spot a confusing screen before it has been built.
- 03
Test
We send builds to your phone through TestFlight on iPhone or Google Play testing tracks. Use them in real situations and add your observations to the project board.
- 04
Submit
We handle listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain the account access used for the release.
- 05
Review
If your app has a login, prepare a working demo account and a live backend for Apple’s review. Leave room in the launch plan for fixes and resubmission.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring what you have; a focused outline is more useful than a long feature list.
- Write down what users need to do in the first release, in the order they will do it.
- List your website, booking software, CRM and payment provider, noting available APIs and who has admin access.
- Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
- Outline who should receive each notification and when, including which categories users should be able to switch off.
- Choose the screens and drop-off points you want to understand, and plan analytics and crash reporting for the first release.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of an app
The scope determines the design, build and testing work.
User types
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share data.
Integrations
A booking system, payment gateway or scanner needs setup, testing and a plan for failures.
Screen design
Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
Existing systems
A backend with a documented API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel need to be built.
User content
Posts and other user submissions need moderation tools, including reporting and blocking, as well as published contact details.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building an app
Wrapping a website in an app shell
Plan useful app features beyond the existing site, since a repackaged website risks Apple rejection.
Forcing an early sign-up
Let people see value before asking for an account when the app does not need significant account-based features.
Asking for notification permission immediately
Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications remain off until permitted.
Leaving access with an agency
Keep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name so the app is easier to move.
Questions
Asked by businesses in San Antonio
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The backend, admin tools and payment setup all affect the work. For example, Google Play requires its billing system for digital subscriptions, while physical services use a different checkout. We send a free quote once we agree the scope.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a team that can explain its approach to your app and its release. Ask who will prepare the store listings, submit the app and handle review. We do that work under your own developer accounts, so the release is connected to accounts your business holds.
What is included in mobile app development?
The work includes the backend and APIs for accounts, data, notifications and admin tools, as well as in-app purchases and subscriptions where needed. Account features also affect the screens: if your app lets people create an account, Apple requires a way to start deleting it inside the app.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Ask about ownership before work begins and make sure the handover covers the material your business needs to continue operating the product. That gives you a clearer position if you later change how the app is maintained.
What happens after the app launches?
Launch is followed by ongoing support, including bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Plan for maintenance releases: Google Play requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, and an out-of-date app can become unavailable to new users on newer devices.
Can the app use the same backend as my website?
Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. This is useful when customers already use your website frequently: the app can reuse the same accounts and data, while your staff work with the same underlying system instead of keeping separate records.
