Choosing
Should you build a native or cross-platform app?
We usually recommend React Native, which shares one codebase across iOS and Android. It gives you a common foundation to maintain, while native modules handle features that need platform-specific work. We use the device features your app needs to guide that choice.
Native development uses Swift for iPhone and Kotlin for Android. It fits apps with deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or a need to use new platform features at launch. The trade-off is maintaining separate codebases. Flutter is another cross-platform option: it uses Dart and draws its own interface, making it useful for a highly customised design, provided your team is comfortable working in Dart.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool that does not need a store listing. It skips store review, but does not appear in the stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen.
Local
What Exeter organisations need from an app
Shops around the High Street, Princesshay and Guildhall can use an app to make repeat orders easier. A fast checkout, saved payment details and a loyalty feature give returning customers practical reasons to use it. Notifications need to arrive at a useful moment, rather than interrupting people without a clear purpose.
For businesses at Exeter Science Park developing a consumer product, covering both app stores and seeing who returns after installing are useful starting requirements. An organisation whose customers already use its web platform can also reuse their accounts and data in an app, so customers do not have to start again.
Rules
What a UK app project has to handle
Account deletion affects both the app and its supporting website. When an app allows account creation, Google Play requires an in-app deletion path and a web link for deletion requests. UK guidance also says organisations providing services through a website must make reasonable adjustments for disabled people. We set up the deletion routes and consider those adjustments in the web design. Apple also requires people to be able to start deleting their account inside the app; deactivation alone is not enough.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
You speak directly with the people designing and building your app. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. We keep decisions and feedback visible on a shared project board between video calls and WhatsApp conversations.

Discover
Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope together before moving into the screen designs.
- 02
Design
We design the iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code, so you can review the flows early.
- 03
Test the prototype
Put the clickable design in front of a few customers or staff and show us where they get stuck. Screen changes cost far less at this stage than after the build.
- 04
Build and measure
We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Tools such as Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics show screen use, drop-off points and device crashes.
- 05
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts while we manage the release work.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather the details below so we can agree a useful scope and identify store requirements early.
- Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
- List your website, CRM, booking system and payment provider; note their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Check if a new personal Google Play account will need a closed test with opted-in testers before production.
- Prepare a privacy policy that reflects the data the app collects, for the app and its Apple store listing.
- For an app with login, plan a working demo account and live backend for Apple’s review.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and time of app development
The work grows with the behaviour you need to support, the screens you design and the safeguards behind them.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Screen variations
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across the interface.
User content
Posts and other submitted material need moderation tools, including reporting and blocking, plus published contact details.
Notifications
A sending service needs audience and timing rules, along with settings that let people switch off categories they do not want.

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price for an app. The number of user roles and the systems it connects to are major drivers: each role needs screens and permissions, while each integration needs setup, testing and failure handling. Once we have agreed the scope, ask us for a quote.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a developer who explains how the app will serve users and what the store will review. Ask how they would avoid turning your existing website into an app shell: Apple expects an app to offer more than a repackaged site. Also ask how they will make the first useful task accessible without unnecessary sign-up.
What is included beyond the app screens?
The work can include the backend and an admin panel as well as the app itself. Staff may need to edit content, look up customers, issue refunds or block abusive accounts without calling a developer. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping customer accounts and data in one place.
Will I own the app and its accounts?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repository in your business’s name too. That gives you control over the materials needed to maintain or move the app later, rather than leaving them in an agency’s or freelancer’s account.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features after release. Google Play also requires new apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Monitor retention and where people leave the main task, alongside the crash-free rate, to see how a release is working for the people using it.
