Choosing
Should you choose a cross-platform or native app?
For an app built around accounts, bookings, payments, forms or content, a cross-platform build is a practical place to start. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while adding native modules where a feature needs them. It renders each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can be shared with a React web app. That gives your web developers a way to contribute, too.
Deep device features can make a native build the better choice. A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool: it skips store review, though it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. We start by learning what your users need to do, then agree the scope with you and choose an approach that fits.

What Durham organisations need from an app
Durham’s higher education organisations include Duke University and North Carolina Central University, while Research Triangle Park is devoted to research facilities. For an organisation with inspection or maintenance teams, an app can give staff forms for each job, with photos, signatures and location details captured in the field and synced to the office when signal returns. We would scope those tasks around the people doing the work.
Durham also has health-related activity centred on Duke University Hospital and private companies. Where an organisation’s customers already use its web platform frequently, an app can reuse their accounts and data. We build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools, keeping that information in one place.
Rules
What a US app project needs to handle
Your checkout needs to match what you sell. For digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app, we set up in-app purchases and subscriptions through the stores. Physical goods and services used outside the app need another payment route, such as a card gateway. Google Play also distinguishes digital purchases from physical goods and services. Stripe lists the United States among the countries where businesses can sign up to accept payments.
How it runs
How a mobile app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less ahead during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the task you want people to complete first.
- 02
Design
We refine the iOS and Android screens with your feedback before writing code. Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff while changes are cheaper to make.
- 03
Test
During development, you get builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use them in a real task and tell us where you get stuck.
- 04
Submit
We handle listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. If the app has a login, prepare a working demo account and live backend, with room for fixes and resubmission.
- 05
Learn
We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release, so you can see which screens people use, where they give up and which devices crash.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring enough detail to agree a useful first release.
- List the tasks users must complete, in the order they would do them.
- Name the website, booking, CRM or payment systems involved; note their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Prepare a privacy policy matching the data the app collects, for the listing and the app itself.
- Check your Google Play account typenew personal accounts need a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for at least 14 days.
- List any analytics or advertising SDKs planned for the app so their data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Cost & time
What affects cost and delivery time
The work grows with the flows and systems the app needs.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even with a shared backend.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
Payments, maps, booking systems and hardware each add setup, testing and failure handling.
Interface variants
Custom animation, multiple languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Moderation adds work, including filtering, reporting, blocking and contact details required by Apple.
Questions

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price: the scope drives the cost. Offline editing with later syncing and conflict handling takes more work than showing the last loaded data. Notifications also need a sending service, rules for recipients and timing, and settings for the categories people want to receive.
How should I choose an app development company?
Choose a team you can speak to directly about the product and its trade-offs. With us, you talk to the people designing and building it. Ask what the app will let customers do: Apple expects more than a repackaged website, and an app shell risks rejection.
Can users delete an account they create in the app?
Yes. If your app allows account creation, account deletion needs to be part of the build. Apple requires a way to start deletion inside the app; deactivation alone is not enough. Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path and a web link for requesting deletion of the account and associated data.
Who owns the app and its code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep developer accounts, signing access and the code repository in your business’s name as well. Accounts held in an agency’s or freelancer’s name can make the app difficult to move when you want to change who maintains it.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for maintenance releases and use real usage data to guide fixes. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air, while native code changes and new permissions need a store release. Track returning users and crash-free rate too.
