Choosing
Should you choose a cross-platform app, a native app or a web app?
For an app built around accounts, forms, bookings, payments or content, a cross-platform build is a practical place to start. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android and adding native modules when a feature needs them. It uses each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can also be shared with a React web app. Flutter is another cross-platform option: it draws its own interface and suits a custom design that needs to look the same on both platforms, though your team would need to work in Dart.
A native build suits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. The trade-off is separate codebases to build and maintain. A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool: it skips store review, but it will not appear in the stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after someone adds it to their Home Screen. We help you choose by looking at the features the app needs to use.

What Derby organisations might need from an app
Derby’s advanced transport manufacturing businesses may need a staff-facing app that makes records available away from a desk. Decide what staff need to do when there is no signal. Showing the last loaded information is a smaller piece of work than allowing edits offline and resolving conflicts when those records sync. The app also needs a place for staff to manage the information behind it, alongside the backend that stores accounts and data.
Derby College provides courses, apprenticeships and employer-related training. An organisation handling appointments could use an app for bookings, reminders and payments, with a staff view of the day’s schedule. For an app serving learners or employers, agree who needs each view and what staff should be able to update before screen design starts.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and see progress across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want people to complete and the systems the app must work with.
- 02
Design
Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff and tell us where they hesitate. Changing a screen at this stage costs less than changing it after the build.
- 03
Build and test
We send test builds to your phone through TestFlight on iPhone or Google Play’s internal or closed testing tracks. Use the app in real situations and share what needs attention.
- 04
Submit
We prepare the store listings and release. If your app has a login, provide a working demo account and keep the backend live for Apple’s review; leave room for a fix and resubmission if needed.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details before we discuss your app.
- Developer accountsStart registration in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number for verification.
- TestersNew personal Google Play accounts need a closed test with opted-in testers before production release.
- Existing systemsList your website, CRM, booking system or payment provider, note which have APIs and who holds admin access.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching the data the app collects; Apple requires a link in the listing and app.
- Third-party toolsIdentify analytics or advertising SDKs so their data collection is covered in Google Play’s Data safety form.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of an app?
The scope determines the work needed to design, build and test your app.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.
Live features
Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
Each connection to a payment gateway, map, CRM, booking system or device needs setup, testing and failure handling.
Screen design
Custom animation, extra languages, right-to-left scripts and tablet layouts add design and testing work across screens.

How much does it cost to have an app developed?
There is no fixed price. A documented API for an existing backend can reduce the work, while building a backend and admin panel from scratch can be as large a task as building the app. The number of features you want to include also shapes the scope. We send a free quote once we have agreed that scope with you.
How do I choose a company to develop my app?
Choose a team that will discuss the product with you and explain what people will use it for. You talk directly to the people who design and build your product with us. If you already have a website, ask what the app adds: Apple’s guidelines expect more than a website repackaged inside an app shell.
Can you add payments and notifications to my app?
Yes. We build in-app purchases and subscriptions for both stores, and set up targeted push notifications. Notifications need a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and settings where people can switch off categories they do not want. Agree those categories with us as part of the feature scope.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. We handle store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. If you already have a website, we can also build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools, so they use the same accounts and data.
What happens after the app launches?
Launch is followed by ongoing support, including bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. We plan for maintenance releases because Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Analytics and crash reporting in the first release help you see where people drop out and which devices crash.
