Choosing

Should you choose cross-platform or native development?

Cross-platform is a practical starting point for an app built around accounts, forms, lists, maps, bookings, payments or content. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while adding native modules where a feature needs them. That gives you a common foundation to maintain across both platforms without making every screen identical.

React Native uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s own interface components. If you already have a React web app, some logic can be shared with it, and web developers can contribute to the app. The useful question is which existing logic fits the mobile task; the screens and flows still need to suit people using a phone.

Native development fits an app built around deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. It means maintaining separate iPhone and Android codebases. We start by learning what your audience needs to do and agree the scope with you, so the platform choice follows the work the app has to perform.

Local

What Cambridge organisations need from an app

Cambridge has research and development, software consultancy and engineering businesses. If your customers already use your web platform frequently, an app can give them access to the same accounts and data on a phone, using a shared backend. You can focus the mobile screens on the tasks they return to most often.

The University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University serve students who may use appointment services. An appointment business serving them needs booking, reminders and payments, plus a staff view of the day’s schedule. Agreeing who edits that schedule is part of deciding what the app and its staff tools need to do.

Tourism contributes to Cambridge’s economy, and shops and restaurants with repeat customers can use an app for reordering and loyalty. Saved payment details, a quick checkout and well-timed notifications give those customers a clear reason to return to the app.

Rules

What a UK app project needs to handle

If your app allows account creation, Apple requires an in-app route to start deleting the account. Google Play also requires an in-app deletion path and a web link for deletion requests. We set up those routes as part of the account flow. If the supporting website uses cookies solely for statistics without consent, UK rules require clear information and an easy way to object; we set up that information and objection route on the site.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. The shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible between calls.

  1. 01

    Design

we prepare screen designs and put a clickable prototype in front of you. Ask a few customers or staff to try it before the screens are built.

  2. 02

    Test

we send builds to your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Use the app for real tasks and tell us where the flow causes trouble.

  3. 03

    Measure

we include analytics and crash reporting in the first release. Agree which screens and drop-off points you want to check after people start using it.

  4. 04

    Prepare submission

if the app has a login, provide a working demo account. The backend needs to be live, and the launch plan needs room for fixes and resubmission.

  5. 05

    Release

we handle store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of the accounts used for the release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

A few practical details will make the first discussion more useful.

  • List the tasks users need in the first release, in the order they will do them.
  • List your website, CRM, booking or payment systems, their APIs and who holds admin access.
  • Start registering developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
  • Prepare a privacy policy that matches the data the app collects, for the app and its Apple listing.
  • Note any analytics or advertising SDKs planned for the app, so store privacy answers cover their data collection.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of app development

The scope determines how much design, backend work and testing the project needs.

  • User roles

customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even with a shared backend.

  • Live features

tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

  • Integrations

each payment gateway, booking system or hardware connection needs setup, testing and failure handling.

  • Screen design

custom animation, multiple languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • Existing systems

a documented backend API reduces the work; a new backend and admin panel add substantial scope.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Cambridge

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have an app developed?

There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the app screens, the backend and staff admin tools, plus the level of offline work. Showing previously loaded data without a signal takes less work than editing records offline and resolving conflicts when they sync. Bring those requirements to the scope discussion before requesting a quote.

How should I choose an app development company?

Choose a team that is clear about ownership and access. Keep the developer accounts, signing access and code repository in your business’s name, so you can move the app later. Ask who will hold each account and how access will be handed over before you agree to the work.

Can the app use the same data as my website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. If you sell digital content or subscriptions inside the app, Apple and Google Play have in-app payment requirements; physical goods and services need a different payment route. Some storefronts or regions permit alternatives.

What happens after the app is released?

Plan for maintenance and check how people use each release. Google Play requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Tools such as Expo EAS Update can deliver JavaScript and content fixes without a store build, while native changes and new permissions still need a store release.

Should users sign up and allow notifications straight away?

Give people a chance to see the app’s value first. Apple’s guidelines ask apps without significant account-based features to allow use without a login. Ask for notification permission when the benefit is clear, such as after an order; on Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.
