Choosing
Which ecommerce platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, although those subscriptions recur and deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It is a practical choice when your team wants to run the store without managing those parts of the platform.
WooCommerce suits a team already using WordPress. A headless storefront, such as Next.js on a commerce back end, fits unusual catalogues, product configurators or a brand with a substantial content component. The trade-off is more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. Consider who will make changes after launch as well as what the store needs to do on its first day.
We recommend a platform after understanding your products and operations. That gives us a basis for choosing the store your team can run, while allowing for the catalogue and checkout you actually need.
Local
What Tennessee businesses need from a store
The state's economy includes music and tourism. If you sell products through social media or messages in either sector, a catalogue with online payment and order tracking gives customers a way to order without handling every request in chat.
Automotive is the state's largest manufacturing sector. If your business sells configurable or made-to-order products, the store might need file uploads, previews or price rules for choices that go beyond ordinary variants.
Beef cattle is the state's largest agricultural commodity, followed by broilers and poultry. For a producer adding online sales to a physical shop, stock sync with the shop's till and click and collect are useful requirements to settle before building.
Rules
What a US ecommerce store needs to handle
Sales tax settings need to reflect the markets you serve. Forty-five US states and the District of Columbia levy a statewide sales tax, while Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. We configure taxes in the store for the products and markets you identify.
For payments, Stripe lists the United States as a country where businesses can sign up to accept payments. We set up a supported gateway, with the choice guided by your country and platform.
How it runs
How an ecommerce project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives you a place to review work and leave feedback across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You tell us how you sell and fulfil orders, and we agree the store's scope together.
- 02
Design and build
We prepare desktop and mobile designs for your feedback before coding, then build and test the store on real devices and browsers.
- 03
Import a sample
We put in a small set of products first. You check titles, variants, prices and images before we import the full catalogue.
- 04
Test orders
You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the admin record.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, followed by ongoing support.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
These details help us understand the store you need and prepare it for launch.
- A product spreadsheet with names, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos in a consistent format, with several angles and an image for each colour.
- Business registration, bank and identity documents for a gateway account in your business's name.
- Your delivery areas, couriers and charging rules, plus tax decisions checked with your accountant.
- Logins for your domain, existing site, email, analytics and Google accounts, held in your business's name.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and effort of ecommerce development
The scope determines how much design, configuration and checking the work needs.
Design approach
Adapting an existing theme takes less work than a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.
Migration scope
Moving customers, order history, reviews or gift cards adds work beyond importing products.
Checkout and pricing rules
Delivery-date pickers, wholesale tiers and customer-specific catalogues add configuration work.
Markets
Selling across countries calls for decisions about currencies, duties, translated content and shipping options.
Apps and plugins
Each addition needs review for its purpose and possible conflicts with the rest of the store.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with ecommerce development
Testing only in sandbox mode
Place a real low-value order with live payment settings and refund it to check currency settings, webhooks and order emails.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where they are needed.
Sending mail without authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM for your sending domain so order messages are less likely to land in spam.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Tennessee
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an ecommerce website cost?
There is no fixed price. The biggest drivers include the size and complexity of your catalogue and the condition of your product data. Variants, bundles or products sold by weight add work; data scattered across supplier PDFs and photo threads needs cleaning before import. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Should I sell through a marketplace or my own store?
An own store gives you control of customer data and margin, while a marketplace brings ready traffic but sets its own rules and keeps the customer relationship. You can also run both. In that case, stock sync helps keep your catalogue aligned across the store and marketplace.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before changing platforms, map each old product and category URL to its closest new page, including pages for products you have dropped. Server-side permanent redirects give those old links a destination.
What is included in checkout and order emails?
We set up and test checkout, including paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders. Each test checks the order record, stock and customer email. Order confirmation, dispatch with tracking, refund, abandoned-cart and password-reset emails need your branding, a sender on your domain and wording that matches your policies.
Will I own my store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. We also connect accounting, ERP, email and marketplace tools where they are part of the project, reducing the need to handle orders, stock and shipping by hand across separate systems.
What should we check after launch?
Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration.
