Choosing
Which platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. Apps add features, though their subscriptions add ongoing costs. If your checkout needs substantial changes, check those requirements before choosing: deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan.
WooCommerce fits a business already using WordPress, particularly if the store sits alongside a substantial amount of content. You have control over the code, data and hosting, but someone needs to look after hosting, updates, security and compatibility between plugins.
A custom store suits an unusual catalogue or checkout that needs more flexibility. You might also keep selling through a marketplace alongside your own site and sync stock between them. A marketplace brings traffic but controls the customer relationship; your own store keeps customer data and margin, while leaving you responsible for attracting visitors. We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations.
Local
What Kentucky businesses need from an online store
Kentucky produces bourbon, and a direct-to-consumer brand selling its products online needs a catalogue that customers can browse and a way to manage orders. As the brand grows, product-page speed, reviews and email flows are useful parts of the store to plan alongside the catalogue.
Kentucky also has large data centre projects in discussion or development. A wholesaler or distributor supplying those projects needs an ordering process suited to business customers: customer-specific prices, minimum quantities and quote requests can all affect how the catalogue and checkout are built. Agree those requirements before choosing a platform.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
State-level sales tax applies across much of the United States. We configure the store’s tax settings for the products and markets you have agreed, so the checkout reflects the rules you provide.
Commercial email needs a valid physical postal address and a clear way to opt out, with opt-out requests honoured. We connect your email tools and set up the opt-out route as part of the email work; your business supplies the address to include.
How it runs
How an e-commerce project runs with us
We’re a studio in India and work remotely through video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of US Eastern time in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. We use the shared board to keep decisions and feedback visible between calls.

Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details so we can discuss the store’s scope with you.
- A product spreadsheet with prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos, with consistent backgrounds and an image for each colour variant.
- Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
- Business registration, bank and identity details for a payment account in your business’s name. Apply early; the provider decides on approval.
- Tax decisions checked with your accountant, plus your delivery areas, couriers and charging approach.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of development
The work involved changes with the condition of your catalogue and the operations the store needs to support.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is ready to import; information scattered across files and messages needs cleaning first.
Migration scope
Moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects adds work beyond moving products. Existing customers usually need a password reset.
Checkout and pricing
Wholesale tiers, customer-specific catalogues and delivery date choices add rules to build and test.
Connections
Each accounting, ERP, email or marketplace connection adds work to the store setup.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Oversized images and excess scripts
Compress product images and load review, chat or tracking scripts only where needed.
Testing only in a sandbox
Place a real low-value order using live payment settings, then refund it to check the payment connection, currency and emails.
Adding an app for every feature
Review what each app does and remove those you no longer use to limit scripts, clutter, conflicts and recurring fees.
Late delivery charges
Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers can see them before the final checkout step.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Kentucky
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an e-commerce website?
There is no fixed price. The design approach and the depth of integrations are major drivers: adapting a theme takes less work than a custom design, while syncing stock and prices with an ERP is more involved than exporting orders to accounting. Once we agree the scope, ask us for a quote.
Can you migrate my existing store?
Yes. We can move products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before choosing a destination, tell us what you need to retain from the current store and which platform holds it. We can then check what the source and destination support as part of the migration scope.
How do you choose a payment gateway?
We choose it around where your business is registered and the currencies you sell in. Compare the payment methods your customers need, along with settlement arrangements and how refunds and disputes work. The gateway’s support for cards, wallets, bank transfers or other methods is part of that decision.
What is included in an e-commerce build?
The build covers the catalogue, product and collection pages, cart, checkout, payment and shipping settings, tax rules, order emails, customer accounts, policy pages and the admin your team uses. We also plan how categories and filters work, and which product choices need their own price, SKU, stock and image.
Will I own the store after launch?
You own your domain, content and code. That means you are not locked to the team that built the store and can choose who works on it later. Discuss how those assets will be handed over when you agree the scope, so your team knows what it will receive.
What should we check after the store launches?
Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change. Give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
