Choosing
Which ecommerce platform should you choose?
Shopify is the simplest option to run when you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. Apps add features, though their subscriptions add ongoing costs, and deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. WooCommerce suits a team already working in WordPress.
A custom or headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, suits an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a content-led brand. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after learning how your products and operations work.
Consider where you sell too. A marketplace brings ready traffic, but sets the rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while leaving you responsible for attracting visitors. You can use both and sync stock between them.
Local
What Michigan businesses need from an online store
Manufacturing is Michigan’s largest output sector. If you supply other businesses, your buyers might need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests or ordering on account. Those requirements affect how customers sign in, see prices and place orders, so bring them into the store scope before choosing a platform.
Michigan growers produce crops including flowers and potatoes. If you sell products through social media or messaging, a store can give customers a catalogue, online payment and order tracking, reducing the need to take each order by hand in chat. Decide which products you want customers to browse and order online.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
State-level sales tax applies in 45 US states, so the checkout needs tax settings that reflect the products and markets you sell to. We configure those settings alongside your payment and shipping setup; you need to decide which tax treatment applies to your products.
For commercial email, including business-to-business email, the build needs an opt-out route and a valid physical postal address. We connect your email tool so those details can be included, and your email process needs to honour opt-out requests.
How it runs
How an ecommerce project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. Shared boards let you review decisions and leave feedback across the time difference.

Discover
Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store scope with you before work starts.
- 02
Design and build
We prepare desktop and mobile designs for your feedback before coding. The build is then tested on real devices and browsers.
- 03
Import products
We start with a small sample. You check titles, variants, prices and images before the full catalogue goes in.
- 04
Test orders
You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the order details in the admin.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, followed by ongoing support.

Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of ecommerce development
The scope determines how much design, data and development work is needed.
Catalogue complexity
Variants, engraving, bundles and products sold by weight or length add configuration work.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is easier to import than details scattered across an old store, supplier PDFs and chat threads.
Design
Adapting a theme takes less work than a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.
Integrations
A basic accounting export is smaller work than stock and price synchronisation with an ERP or marketplaces.
Migration
Moving customer records, order history, reviews or gift cards adds to a products-only transfer.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with ecommerce development
Heavy product pages
Compress oversized images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.
Order emails in spam
Set up SPF or DKIM authentication on the sending domain.
Surprise checkout costs
Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages instead of waiting until the last checkout step.
Too many apps
Review what each app or plugin does and remove those you no longer use to reduce clutter, conflicts and recurring fees.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Michigan
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an ecommerce website?
There is no fixed price. The work depends on the platform, the products and variants that need importing, and the connections required for tools such as accounting or marketplaces. We send you a free quote once the scope is agreed, so you can review the work included before deciding.
Which payment gateway should I use?
Choose a gateway that supports your business registration, currencies and customers’ preferred payment methods. We support Stripe, PayPal and other gateways according to the country and platform; Stripe lists the United States for business sign-ups. Compare how refunds, disputes and settlement work before opening your account.
What is included in a store build?
A store build covers the catalogue, product and collection pages, cart, checkout, accounts, policy pages and the admin your team uses. It also includes order emails. Their wording should match your actual policies, and their sender should use your store’s own domain.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Plan the URLs as well: each old product or category URL needs a permanent redirect to its closest new page, including when a product is no longer sold.
Will I own the store after it is built?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep control of those assets as part of your handover, alongside access to the store’s admin for your own team.
What should we check after launch?
Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
