Choosing

Which platform should you choose?

Shopify is the simplest option to run when you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. Apps add features, though their subscriptions add ongoing costs. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan, so check your checkout requirements before choosing it.

WooCommerce suits a team already using WordPress. A custom store suits unusual catalogues or checkout requirements. A headless storefront using Next.js with a commerce back end is another route for product configurators or a content-led brand. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer.

We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations. Bring examples of the choices customers need to make, the way your stock is managed and any checkout rules you already use. That gives us a basis for discussing the work involved and how much control your team needs after launch.

Local

What Leeds organisations need from an online shop

Retail is a key sector in Leeds. A retailer taking orders through social media or messaging apps might need a searchable catalogue, online payment and order tracking so customers can place orders without a conversation for each purchase.

Leeds also has manufacturing businesses. A manufacturer selling to trade customers may need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests and ordering on account. Those requirements shape the catalogue and checkout from the start.

Leeds is served by five universities. For a university team selling made-to-order printed products, a store needs to collect the customer’s choices and files and apply the relevant price rules. Product pages need to make those options clear before the order is placed.

Rules

What a UK online shop needs to handle

Mandatory charges must not be added after a headline price is shown. We set up product and checkout pricing so required charges are presented clearly, and take delivery rules into account when configuring what customers see.

A UK limited company must show its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status on its website. We include space for those details on the store. For marketing emails to individual customers, we set up permission collection and an opt-out in each message.

How it runs

How an e-commerce project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 5h30m ahead of UK time, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time. The shared board gives us a place to keep decisions and feedback visible across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store’s scope with you before design starts.

  2. 02

    Design

We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review them and give feedback before any code is written.

  3. 03

    Import a sample

We load a small set of products first. You check titles, variants, prices and images before the full catalogue goes in.

  4. 04

    Test checkout

We test paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, checking the order record, stock and customer email for each outcome.

  5. 05

    Launch

We set up the domain, email, analytics and search. Ongoing support follows, so you have help with the store after it goes live.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

These details help us understand the store and prepare its setup.

  • A product spreadsheet with descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
  • Original product photos, including an image for each colour variant and views from several angles.
  • Business registration, bank and identity documents for a payment account in your business’s name. Apply early; the provider decides on approval.
  • Your tax and delivery decisions, checked with your accountant where appropriate.
  • Access to your domain, DNS, current site, email, analytics and Google accounts, held in your business’s name.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The work depends on the catalogue, design and systems your store needs.

  • Catalogue complexity

Variants, bundles, engraving and products sold by weight or length add decisions and setup work.

  • Design approach

Adapting a theme takes less work than designing around unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Product data

A clean spreadsheet is easier to import than information spread across an old store, supplier PDFs and photo threads.

  • Integration depth

An order export to accounting is smaller work than syncing stock and prices with an ERP or marketplaces.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid

  • Oversized images and too many scripts

Compress product images and load review, chat or tracking scripts only where needed.

  • An app for every feature

Review what each app or plugin does and remove those you no longer use; each can add scripts, clutter and recurring fees.

  • Late delivery charges

Show estimates on product or cart pages so customers see them before the last checkout step.

  • Lost URLs during migration

Map old product and category URLs to their closest new pages using permanent server-side redirects, including for discontinued products.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Leeds

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does an e-commerce website cost?

There is no fixed price. Custom checkout rules, connections to accounting or marketplaces, and the work involved in moving an existing store all affect the scope. For a migration, the products, customers and order history that can be transferred depend on the platforms involved. We agree the scope with you before the work starts.

Which payment gateway should I choose?

Choose a gateway that supports your business registration, selling currencies and the payment methods your customers need. We support Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal and local gateways, subject to country and platform. Compare settlement timing and the way refunds and disputes are handled before deciding.

Should I sell through my own store or a marketplace?

Both are viable options, and some brands use both with synced stock. A marketplace brings ready traffic but sets the rules and keeps the customer relationship. Your own store keeps customer data and margin, while leaving you responsible for attracting visitors.

What else is included in the store build?

We build product pages with structured data so they are eligible for rich search results. Transactional emails also need attention: order confirmations, dispatch messages with tracking links, refunds, abandoned carts and password resets should use your branding, a sender on your domain and wording that matches your policies.

Will I own the store after launch?

You own your domain, content and code. That means you are not locked to the team that built the store and can decide who works on it later. Keep control of those assets as part of your plans for managing the shop after launch.

What should we check after the store launches?

Measure conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change. Give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
