Choosing
Which ecommerce platform should you choose?
Shopify is the simplest option to run if you want the platform to handle hosting, security, checkout and updates. You can add features through apps, though their subscriptions add recurring costs. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. It suits a team that wants less day-to-day platform maintenance and can work within those checkout limits.
WooCommerce fits a business already using WordPress, especially when the store sits alongside a substantial amount of content. You have control over the code, data and hosting. That control comes with work: someone needs to manage hosting, security, updates and plugin compatibility, so decide who will take responsibility before choosing it.
A custom storefront such as Next.js on a commerce back end suits an unusual catalogue, product configurator or content-led brand. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations, so the choice reflects how you sell and how your team will maintain the store.
Local
What Chicago businesses need from an online store
Chicago is a hub for commerce and industry. If you run a retail shop and want to add online sales, you need stock to stay in step with your shop's till system and a clear collection option for customers. We also structure collections and filters around the way people shop, with size or colour choices tied to the right stock and image.
The Loop is a central business district. If your business sells to organisations there, customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities or quote requests could be part of the store brief. A maker selling configurable products to those customers might also need file uploads, previews or price rules. For delivery, we turn your decisions into shipping zones, rates and conditions, including restrictions for products that cannot go to certain areas.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
State sales tax varies: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. We configure tax settings for the products and markets you sell to. You decide which taxes apply and whether displayed prices include them, with your accountant checking those decisions before we set them up.
Commercial emails need a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out, with opt-out requests honoured within 10 business days. For promotional email, we connect your email tool and set up the address and opt-out route as part of the work.
How it runs
How an ecommerce project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards, keeping decisions and feedback visible between calls. India time is 10h30m (Eastern) to 13h30m (Pacific) ahead of mainland US time in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. Bring the decisions you have made and the questions you still need to resolve.
- 02
Design
We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback before code is written.
- 03
Import
We load a small product sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images; once the format is right, we import the full catalogue.
- 04
Test
You place orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases. Check the stock, emails and order records in the admin as well.
- 05
Launch and care
We handle domain, email, analytics and search setup for launch, then provide ongoing support. The agreed scope gives you a reference for the work.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather what you have so we can see what is ready and what still needs work.
- A product spreadsheet with prices, SKUs, variants, stock, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos, including an image for each colour variant.
- Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
- Business registration, bank and identity documents for a gateway account in your business name.
- Your store branding and policy wording for order and account emails sent from your domain.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The work involved depends on what you already have and what the store needs to do.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet is ready to import; information scattered across an old store, supplier PDFs and chat photos needs cleaning first.
Design
Adapting a theme takes less work than a custom design built around unusual products or a distinct brand.
Integrations
An order export to accounting is smaller work than stock and price synchronisation with an ERP or marketplaces.
Migration
Moving reviews, gift cards and redirects adds to the work. Customer passwords usually cannot move, so existing customers need a reset email.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid
Adding an app for every small feature
Review what each app does and remove unused ones. Apps add scripts, possible conflicts and sometimes recurring fees.
Leaving delivery charges until the last checkout step
Show estimates on product or cart pages so customers see the costs earlier.
Overloading product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.
Sending order emails without domain authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM to help prevent messages landing in spam.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Chicago
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an ecommerce website cost to develop?
There is no fixed price. The size and complexity of your catalogue are major drivers, especially when products have custom options, bundles or weight-based sales. Selling across markets also adds decisions about currencies, translated content and delivery. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
What is included in an ecommerce build?
A store build covers the catalogue, cart, checkout, accounts, policy pages and the admin your team uses. Payment setup includes selecting a gateway; we support Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal and local gateways according to country and platform. We also test paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders against stock, records and emails.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before customers use the new store, a real low-value order on live payment settings, followed by a refund, helps catch problems with currency settings, payment notifications and order emails that sandbox testing alone could miss.
Will I own my store?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in to the team that built it. An own store also keeps customer data and margin with your business, though you need to attract visitors to it. Some brands sell through marketplaces as well and sync stock.
What should we check after launch?
Retest the full checkout after every app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Compare conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed with your figures from before launch or migration.
Can you connect the store to our existing tools?
Yes. We connect stores to accounting, ERP, email and marketplace tools so orders, stock and shipping do not all need to be handled by hand across separate systems. We build on Shopify, WooCommerce or a headless Next.js storefront; the choice starts with how your operation works.
