Choosing

Which platform should you choose?

Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. Features are added through apps, so check their recurring subscriptions when assessing what the store will need. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan.

WooCommerce is a useful option if you already use WordPress, publish substantial content or want control over your code, data and hosting. That control comes with work: someone needs to manage hosting, updates, security and plugin compatibility. Decide who will take those jobs on before choosing it.

A custom storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, fits unusual catalogues, product configurators or a content-led brand. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations, so the choice reflects how you sell and how much flexibility you need.

Local

What Belfast businesses need from an online store

Belfast has commercial and industrial docks, a shipyard, and aerospace and defence contractors. If you distribute products to organisations in those sectors, your store may need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities or quote requests. We can plan the catalogue and ordering flow around those requirements, including ordering on account where that is how you sell.

Belfast remains within British and European Single Market trading areas for goods. If your brand sells goods into new markets, the store needs room for those operations alongside the product pages customers use today. Growing direct-to-consumer brands may also need subscriptions, reviews and email flows, with pages built to load quickly.

Rules

What a UK store needs to handle

UK rules prohibit adding mandatory charges after a headline price. We set up the product and checkout pricing so mandatory charges are shown with the advertised price, and configure the delivery and tax settings you agree for the store.

Marketing emails to individual customers require permission and an opt-out. We set up the email connection with a way to record permission and let recipients opt out. For a UK limited company, we also include its registered number, registered office address, place of registration and limited-company status on the website.

How it runs

How your project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 5h30m ahead of UK time, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time; the shared board keeps decisions and feedback visible across the difference.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Start with the details your payment provider will request.

  • Product dataGather names, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes in a spreadsheet.
  • PoliciesPrepare plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms pages.
  • Business decisionsCheck product taxes with your accountant and decide on couriers, delivery areas and charges.
  • AccessGather domain, DNS, current site, email, analytics and Google logins held in your business’s name.
  • Order emailsGather your branding and policy wording for confirmations, dispatch notices and other customer emails.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of development

The work changes with the decisions you make about the catalogue, design and operations.

  • Catalogue complexity

Variants, bundles, custom options and products sold by weight or length add setup work.

  • Design approach

Adapting a theme takes less work than creating a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Integrations

An order export to accounting is smaller work than syncing stock and prices with an ERP or several marketplaces.

  • Checkout and markets

Wholesale pricing, delivery date pickers and additional currencies, languages or tax setups add rules to build.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building your store

  • Leaving old URLs behind

When moving platforms, map each old product and category URL to its closest new page with a permanent redirect, including pages for dropped products.

  • Adding an app for every feature

Review what each app or plugin does and remove unused ones. Each can add scripts, admin clutter, conflicts or recurring fees.

  • Overloading product pages

Compress oversized images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where they are needed.

  • Testing only in a sandbox

Place a low-value order using live payment settings and refund it to check currency settings, webhooks and order emails.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Belfast

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does an ecommerce website cost to develop?

There is no fixed price. The work depends on the condition of your product data, the product and checkout pages you need, and the payment and shipping settings the store requires. A clean spreadsheet takes less preparation than data scattered across an old store, supplier PDFs and photos. Ask us for a quote once the scope is agreed.

How do I choose a payment gateway?

Start with where your business is registered and the currencies you sell in. Compare the payment methods your customers need, along with settlement timing and how refunds and disputes work. We support Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay and local gateways; the available choice depends on your country and platform.

Can you move my existing store to a new platform?

Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before choosing the destination, review which records your team needs to keep and what each platform permits you to move, so those requirements are included in the scope.

What is included in an ecommerce store build?

A store build covers the catalogue, product and collection pages, cart, checkout, payments, shipping, tax settings, customer accounts, policy pages and the admin your team uses. We also organise product choices such as size or colour into variants, with their own price, SKU, stock and image where needed.

Will I own the store after launch?

You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep those assets under your business’s control. For day-to-day administration, give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.

What should I monitor after the store goes live?

Monitor conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Those measures give you places to investigate when you review the store. We build product pages with structured data so they are eligible for rich results in search.
