Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom storefront?
An existing theme is a practical starting point when its layouts suit your products. Customising it keeps setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more room to represent your brand and accommodate unusual products, but subsequent layout changes need development work. Think about the pages your staff will need to change after launch as well as the design you want to start with.
A headless storefront using Hydrogen or Next.js suits content-led brands or unusual buying flows. It changes the editing arrangement: you give up the theme editor, and apps that add features through a theme might not work. That trade-off is worth considering before choosing apps or planning how your team will manage the storefront.
If you sell across borders, decide how much needs to differ by market. One store can manage local-currency prices, translations and international domains through markets. Separate stores suit you when each country needs its own catalogue or team, or when you need payouts in different currencies.
Market
What do buyers in New Zealand expect?
Buyers need a workable way to pay. Stripe supports businesses in New Zealand, so it is an option to consider when selecting a gateway. Compare the total cost per order: a third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even if Shopify Payments is also active. Check the gateway against your business details before settling on it.
If you also sell from a physical shop, keeping online and in-store stock in one system affects how your catalogue is set up. Shopify's point-of-sale app can sit alongside the online store, so your staff have a connected way to handle stock across those sales channels.
Rules
What does a Shopify project in New Zealand need to handle?
GST is 15% on most goods and services, including imports. We configure the store's tax settings for your market, using the tax treatment that applies to your products and business. Include that information when you agree the store setup.
Online sellers operating as traders must make that status clear to potential buyers. We put that information on the store so a visitor can see who is selling to them.
Commercial electronic messages need consent, accurate information about who authorised them and a working unsubscribe facility. When we connect email flows, we account for consent and set up the sender information and unsubscribe route in the messages.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We are a studio in India and work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 6h30m behind New Zealand time, or 7h30m behind during New Zealand daylight time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and follow decisions across that difference.

Discover
Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store scope with you before moving into the work, including what the store needs to do for the people who will use it.
- 02
Build and review
We work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while your live store keeps trading.
- 03
Prepare for launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.
- 04
Handover
Your team learns to handle orders, products and discounts. You can then carry out those day-to-day tasks yourself.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather the information your store and its payment setup will need.
- Your Shopify account and plan in the business's own name and billing.
- A product sheet with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock by location.
- Consistent product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus your shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review generated policy templates before using them.
- For a move from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, identify the products, customers and orders to bring across.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timing?
The scope determines the work involved and how long the project takes.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is smaller work than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Extra product options, metafield-driven specifications, bundles and made-to-order choices add setup and theme work.
Custom logic
Business rules need development and testing. Public apps with Functions work on any plan; custom apps containing Shopify Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Connections and markets
ERP, accounting, warehouse or marketplace integrations add work, especially with two-way stock and price sync. Each market with its own prices, translations and shipping rates adds work too.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Product and collection URLs change to Shopify's fixed paths. Prepare a full old-to-new URL map; redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Each app can add page scripts and another subscription. Check the theme files when uninstalling, since some apps leave code behind.
Editing the live theme
A mistake is visible to visitors immediately. Duplicate the theme, preview your changes on the copy, then publish it.
Leaving demo content in place
Check for placeholder policies and default notification wording before launch, so buyers do not encounter unfinished content.

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The work is shaped by what you need to migrate, any custom discount or checkout rules, and the markets your store needs to serve. For a migration, gather your existing product, customer and order exports and the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Can I hire you to build a Shopify store?
Yes. We build stores for first-time online sellers and provide training so your staff can run orders, products and discounts themselves. Shopify handles hosting, security and software updates, leaving your team to focus on operating the store and keeping its product information current.
How should I organise products into collections?
Choose manual collections when your staff need to pick each product, or automated collections when consistent tags, product types, vendors or prices can define the group. For details such as dimensions or care instructions, metafields can hold structured information that the theme displays in its own product-page section.
Who owns the store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code. The store stays in your account, and a developer works through a collaborator account that you approve. You choose the permissions and can remove that access at any time, so you retain control of the store after handover.
What support is available after launch?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built the store. You can also review Shopify reports for conversion, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, alongside organic clicks and product-page indexing in Search Console. Periodically remove unused apps, staff accounts and collaborator access.
How much can the Shopify checkout be changed?
Shopify runs the checkout itself, so the changes available depend on the plan and the part of checkout you want to alter. Standard checkout customisation works from the Basic plan up. Apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus.
