Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build your own?
An existing theme is a practical starting point when its layout suits your catalogue. Customising it keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme gives you more control over the design and can suit unusual products, although later layout changes need development work.
For individual features, an app is usually quicker to add, but check its recurring fee, the scripts it adds and your reliance on its maker. Custom code or a custom app can fit a more specific requirement; it also needs maintenance as Shopify changes. A headless storefront suits content-led brands or unusual buying flows, but you give up the theme editor and some theme-based apps may not work.
Check your checkout requirements early. Shopify runs the checkout, and apps that change its information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. Shopify Functions offer another route for specific back-end rules, such as hiding a delivery option or blocking an order that breaks a rule.
Market
What do buyers in Malaysia expect at payment?
Give customers a way to pay that fits how they already shop. FPX lets an online buyer pay directly from a bank account through internet banking. DuitNow QR lets a merchant accept payment through participating banks or e-wallets using a single QR code. We configure the store’s payment setup for your market and test the chosen connections.
Check the full cost per order when selecting a gateway. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is active. If Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business, compare that charge alongside the gateway’s own costs before choosing.
Rules
What does a Shopify project in Malaysia need to handle?
Your tax settings need to reflect what you sell. Service tax rates vary by service, so confirm the treatment of your products or services before setup. We configure the store’s taxes for the market using the rates that apply to your business.
Personal data handled in commercial transactions falls within the country’s data protection rules. Your store needs a privacy page that explains your business’s handling of customer information. We design the page as part of the store, ready for your business’s policy content and review before launch.
How it runs
How a Shopify development project runs with us
We plan feedback and approvals around the time difference: IST is 2h30m behind. Share decisions and questions on the project board between calls, and we can keep the current work visible while you review the next stage.
- 01
Discover
Tell us about your business, customers and goals. We agree the store’s scope with you, including the work needed for your catalogue and buying process.
- 02
Arrange access
The store stays in your account. You approve our collaborator account, choose its permissions and can remove access when it is no longer needed.
- 03
Build and review
We work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve it before publication, while your existing live store keeps trading.
- 04
Prepare for search
We build with clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch. You can review the product information that appears on those pages.
- 05
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.

Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The scope of the store determines how much design, setup and testing work is involved.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is a smaller piece of work than designing and building a custom theme around your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices, additional product options and specifications driven by metafields add setup and theme work.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customers, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Integrations and markets
Accounting or warehouse connections, two-way stock and price sync, and market-specific prices, translations and shipping all add work.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Map old URLs to their new destinations and import the map at launch. Redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Check what each app adds before installing it. Apps can add page scripts and subscriptions; inspect theme files when removing one.
Inconsistent catalogue data
Agree on tags, product types and vendors before import. Filters and automated collections use these fields to place products.
Unfinished launch content
Replace demo material, placeholder policies and default notification wording before customers see the store.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Malaysia
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The scope depends on the catalogue choices you need, the data being migrated and the markets you plan to sell into. For example, an engraving field needs additional setup, while moving customers and orders involves more work than setting up a new catalogue.
Can I hire someone to build a Shopify store for me?
Yes. We can set up the store for you and train your staff to handle orders, products and discounts after handover. This suits a first-time online seller who wants to run the shop without taking on hosting, security or software updates.
Should my collections be manual or automated?
Choose manual collections when you want staff to select each product. Automated collections suit a catalogue with consistent product data: conditions can use tags, product type, vendor or price to keep the collection current. Decide who will maintain those fields before choosing automation.
Is search setup included in the store build?
Yes. The build includes clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages from launch. After launch, use Shopify reports to review conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers; Search Console shows organic clicks and whether product pages are indexed.
Will I own the store after handover?
You own your domain, content and code. That means your store is not locked to the team that built it, and you can make decisions about who works on it afterwards. Keep those assets in your control when arranging the handover.
Can you support the store after launch?
Yes. Ongoing support follows launch with the same people who designed and built the store. As part of keeping the store tidy, review installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access from time to time, and remove access or tools that are no longer used.
