Choosing
Should you customise a theme or build a custom store?
An existing theme is a sensible starting point when its layouts suit your products and the way customers buy. Customising it keeps the initial setup lighter and makes later theme updates simpler. A custom theme suits unusual products or a brand that needs a distinct layout, but later layout changes need development work.
Apps are a quick way to add features, but check their recurring fees, extra scripts and dependence on the app maker. Custom code or a custom app can fit a specific requirement more closely, with maintenance needed as Shopify changes. For a content-led brand or an unusual buying flow, a headless storefront is another option, although you give up the theme editor and some theme-based apps may not work.
For international selling, one store can use markets for local currencies, translations and domains. Separate stores suit different catalogues or teams by country, or payouts in different currencies. We learn your goals and agree the scope with you before work starts.
Local
What Boston organisations need from a Shopify store
Boston has finance, professional services and technology businesses. If your organisation is selling online for the first time, you may need a store your staff can manage without taking on hosting, security and software updates themselves.
Biotechnology is another part of the local economy. A brand in that field selling products across countries could use a single admin to manage local-currency prices, translated content and shipping for each market.
The city also attracts college students from around the world. If you run a shop serving that audience, connecting Shopify's point-of-sale app with your online store gives you a way to manage online and in-store stock in one system.
Rules
What a United States store needs to handle
Statewide sales tax varies across the United States; Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Your checkout setup needs to reflect the market you sell in. We configure the store's taxes, shipping and payments for that market, alongside its products and collections. Give us the destinations and tax treatment you need applied so we can use them when configuring your store.
How it runs
How a Shopify project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter; the difference is 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board gives us a place to keep decisions and project work visible across that difference.
- 01
Access
Your store stays in your own account. You approve a collaborator account and choose the permissions, which you can remove at any time.
- 02
Design and build
We prepare desktop and mobile designs for your feedback before coding, then build and test the store on real devices and browsers.
- 03
Theme review
For an existing store, we work on an unpublished theme copy. You preview and approve it before publication while the live store keeps trading.
- 04
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.
- 05
Handover
Your team learns to handle orders, products and discounts independently before we hand over the store.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring the details that apply to your store.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business's name and billing.
- Consistent product photos for each colour or style, plus size charts, care instructions and specifications.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review any generated templates before use.
- A list of current and planned tools, such as reviews, email marketing and couriers, with what each must do.
- For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of Shopify development
The work changes with the store you need.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is a smaller job than designing and building a custom theme for your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices and specifications stored in metafields add setup and theme work.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customer and order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Business logic
Custom rules need development and testing. Public apps with Shopify Functions work on any plan, while custom apps containing Function APIs need Shopify Plus.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Installing an app for every small task adds subscriptions and can add scripts across the store. Check the theme files when removing an app, as some leave code behind.
Inconsistent tags, product types and vendors can put products in the wrong collection or hide them from filters. Agree how staff will enter those fields and keep them consistent.
Migrating without redirects leaves old product and collection links without their intended destination. Prepare an old-to-new URL map for launch; redirects only work from URLs that no longer load a page.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Boston
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The scope depends on the theme design, the depth of any migration and the business rules the store needs. For example, moving orders as well as products adds work, as does custom checkout logic. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We build Shopify stores and prepare them for search from launch, including clean product URLs, structured data and fast pages. Handover also includes training, so your team can manage everyday work such as processing orders, updating products and running discounts.
How should I choose a payment gateway?
Compare the total cost per order, especially if Shopify Payments is unavailable to your business. A third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee even when Shopify Payments is also active. Include that fee in your comparison with the gateway's own charges before choosing.
Will I own my store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Review staff accounts and collaborator access from time to time and remove access that is no longer used. Shopify also expires collaborator access that goes unused.
What happens after the store launches?
Ongoing support follows launch from the people who designed and built your store. You can also use Shopify reports to track conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers, and use Search Console to review organic clicks and product-page indexing.
How will products and collections be organised?
Collections can be selected manually or built automatically from conditions such as product type, vendor, tag or price. Automated collections stay current when the underlying product data is consistent. Metafields can hold details such as dimensions or care instructions and show them in their own product-page sections.
