Choosing

Should you choose cross-platform or native development?

Cross-platform development is a good fit for apps built around accounts, bookings, forms, payments or content. We use React Native to share a codebase across iOS and Android, adding native modules where needed. That gives you both platforms without maintaining a separate app for each. React Native uses each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can be shared with a React website.

Flutter is another cross-platform option. It draws its own interface, which suits a heavily branded design that needs screens to look identical across platforms. The trade-off is that your development team needs to work in Dart. Consider who will maintain the app as well as how you want its screens to look.

Native development in Swift and Kotlin suits apps that depend on deep device features, heavy graphics, complex background work or new platform features at launch. It gives you that access, with separate codebases to build and maintain. We use React Native for most apps and go native when deep device features call for it.

Local

What Northampton organisations need from an app

Distribution and finance are major private-sector employers in Northampton. A distribution business with delivery or inspection staff could use job forms that capture photos, signatures and locations offline, then sync them to the office when signal returns. For an employer managing customer accounts, the work also includes deciding what staff need to see and change in an admin panel, without having to call a developer.

The University of Northampton is a major employer in the town. Where a university service takes appointments, a booking flow can give users a way to choose a slot and receive reminders, while staff have a view of the day’s schedule. Set out who will update that schedule and how payments fit the service before deciding which screens to build.

Rules

What a UK app project has to handle

UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 govern the handling of personal data. When your app lets people create accounts, we build an in-app route to start account deletion and a web link for deletion requests. Apple requires the in-app route; Google Play requires that route and the web link, along with deletion of associated data. We also build the backend that holds the account data those requests concern.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We are MSH Technologies, a web, app and AI studio in India. We work remotely through video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time; the shared board keeps feedback and decisions visible across that difference.

    Design

We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code, so you can review the flows.

  3. 03

    Check the prototype

Put it in front of a few customers or staff and bring their feedback back to us while screens are easier to change.

  4. 04

    Test the build

Try the app on your own phone through TestFlight or a Google Play testing track, then tell us what needs attention.

  5. 05

    Submit

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You keep those accounts in your business’s hands.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Bring these details to make the first discussion useful.

  • List what users must do in the first release, in the order they would do it.
  • Note the website, booking, CRM or payment systems involved, their APIs and who holds admin access.
  • Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • Prepare a privacy policy that reflects the data the app collects, for the listing and the app.
  • For a login app, plan a working demo account and live backend for store submission.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timing of app development

The work changes with the features and systems your app needs.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than data loaded on request.

  • Integrations

A payment gateway, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and work to handle failures.

  • Screen design

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • User content

If people post content, Apple requires filtering, reporting, user blocking and published contact details. Those need to be built into the product.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Northampton

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price. A new backend and admin panel can involve as much work as the app, while an existing backend with a documented API reduces that work. Offline editing and later syncing also require more work than showing previously loaded data. Agree the scope before requesting a quote.

Which app developer should I hire?

Choose a developer who leaves your business in control of the product. Developer accounts, signing access and code repositories held in an agency’s name can make an app difficult to move. With us, you own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Ask where the accounts and repository will be held before work starts.

Can the app use the same data as my website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, so customer accounts and data live in one place. We also set up push notifications: these need a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and settings where users can switch off categories they do not want.

How do payments work inside the app?

The checkout depends on what you sell. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used in the app; physical goods and services used outside it need another payment method. Google Play similarly requires its billing for digital goods and subscriptions, but not for physical goods or services. Some storefronts or regions allow alternatives.

What maintenance should I plan after launch?

Plan regular releases and check how people use the app. Google Play requires apps to target a recent Android API level, and outdated apps can become unavailable to new users on newer devices. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out over the air; native changes and new permissions still need a store release. Track return use and the crash-free rate too.
