Choosing

Should you choose cross-platform, native or a web app?

For an app built around bookings, accounts, forms, maps or content, a cross-platform build is a practical choice. We usually use React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while adding native modules where a feature needs them. It uses each platform’s own interface components, and some logic can also be shared with a React web app.

A native build is worth considering when your app needs deep device features. That gives those features room to shape the technical approach. Before choosing, identify what people need to do on their phones and which device functions are essential to that task.

A progressive web app is another option for staff tools. It skips store review, but it will not appear in the app stores unless packaged for them, and on an iPhone it can ask for notification permission only after being added to the Home Screen. Wrapping your existing website in an app shell also risks Apple rejecting it; plan a useful reason for someone to install the app.

Local

What Norfolk organisations need from an app

Norfolk’s economy includes transportation, utilities and trade. If you manage a delivery, maintenance or inspection team, an app can give staff job forms with photos, signatures and location, then sync their records to the office when signal returns. The office needs a usable view of that information too.

Tourism is an economic driver in Norfolk. A restaurant serving repeat customers could use an app for reordering, loyalty and saved payment details, with a fast checkout and notifications timed around a useful action. Appointment businesses such as salons need a different flow: booking, reminders and payments for customers, plus a staff view of the day’s schedule.

Rules

What a US app project needs to handle

If you are a state or local government organisation, the app needs to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA under the applicable US rule. We design the iOS and Android screens with that requirement in view and set up the screen layouts for accessibility review.

Your checkout depends on what you sell. For digital content and subscriptions used in the app, we set up the applicable store purchase flow. For physical goods or services used outside the app, we use another payment route; Stripe is available to businesses in the United States.

How it runs

How an app project runs with us

We plan feedback around the time difference: India is 10h30m ahead of Eastern time in winter and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. Shared project boards keep decisions visible between conversations.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the task you want the app to make possible and the people who will use it.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. Put the clickable prototype in front of customers or staff; changing a screen now takes less work than changing it after the build.

  3. 03

    Build and test

You receive test builds on your own phone through TestFlight or Google Play’s testing tracks. Use the app as your customers or staff would, and tell us where a task becomes difficult.

  4. 04

    Submit

We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts while we work through the release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

A few practical details will make the first discussion more useful.

  • List what users must do in the first release, in the order they will do it.
  • Note the website, CRM, booking software or payment provider the app needs to use, plus API and admin access details.
  • Start registering Apple and Google developer accounts in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number.
  • If you have a new personal Google Play developer account, check its closed-testing requirement before planning a production release.
  • Plan to keep signing access and code repositories in your business’s name, so the app remains movable.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The scope of the build determines the work involved.

  • Backend and admin tools

A documented existing API can reduce the build; a new backend and admin panel add substantial work.

  • Live features

Chat, presence and tracking need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.

  • Screen designs

Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts each add design and testing across screens.

  • User-generated content

Reporting, filtering, blocking abusive users and publishing contact details add moderation work to the app.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Norfolk

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to have an app developed?

There is no fixed price. A major driver is whether you need a new app, backend and staff admin panel built together. Offline editing with later syncing takes more work than displaying recently loaded data, and each integration needs setup, testing and failure handling. We agree the scope with you before the work begins.

How should I choose an app development company?

Choose a company that can explain how it will test the main user task and measure the app after release. Ask where it would place sign-up and notification requests: people should see value before being asked to create an account, and notification permission is more useful when its benefit is clear.

Can the app use the same customer data as my website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools, keeping customer accounts and data in one place. If people can create accounts, the app also needs a way to start deleting them inside the app; Google Play additionally requires a web link for deletion requests.

Who owns the app code?

You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. That gives your business control over those assets after the build. When reviewing the scope, make sure it identifies the content and code being delivered alongside the app, so your team knows what it will receive.

What support does an app need after launch?

Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Google Play also requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, so maintenance releases need a place in your plans. Track retention and the crash-free rate to see where people return, drop out or encounter failures.
