App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.
Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.
Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform or native app?
We usually build with React Native, sharing a codebase across iOS and Android while using native modules where a feature needs them. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s interface components. If you already have a React website, some logic can be shared with it, and web developers can contribute to the app.
Native development in Swift and Kotlin suits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. You will have separate codebases to build and maintain. Flutter is another choice: its Dart code draws the interface, which suits a heavily branded design intended to look the same across platforms.
A progressive web app is worth considering for a staff tool. It avoids store review, although it needs packaging to appear in app stores; on iPhone, it can ask for notification permission only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. We discuss the tasks and device features your app needs before agreeing the scope.
Local
What Guildford organisations need from an app
Guildford is a university town, with the University of Surrey among its organisations. An organisation whose customers already use a web platform might consider an app when those customers use the service frequently. Reusing their accounts and data gives people a familiar way to sign in and continue their tasks on a phone.
Guildford is also the seat of the wider borough. For an organisation handling service requests and customer records, the phone app is only part of the work: staff may also need an admin panel to look up accounts, edit content or deal with abusive users. Agreeing those staff tasks early helps define what the backend must hold.
Rules
What the UK project needs to handle
If your app connects to a website through which you provide services, the website needs reasonable adjustments for disabled people under Equality Act guidance. We design the website screens with that requirement in mind and build a shared backend for the website, app and admin tools. Discuss the adjustments during design, so the website screens and their underlying structure are considered before the build.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
You work with us remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m ahead during British Summer Time; the shared board keeps decisions and feedback available across that difference.
- 01
Design
We design the iOS and Android screens and flows, then refine them with your feedback before writing code.
- 02
Test the prototype
Put the clickable screens in front of a few customers or staff and bring their feedback to us. Screen changes are cheaper at this stage than after build.
- 03
Prepare for review
If the app has a login, provide a working demo account. We need the backend live for submission and room in the launch plan for fixes and resubmission.
- 04
Submit
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your own developer accounts.
- 05
Measure
We include analytics and crash reporting in the first release, so you can see screen use, drop-offs and device crashes.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring these details to help us define the work together.
- TasksList what users must do in the first release, in the order they will do it.
- Existing systemsNote the website, booking software, CRM or payment provider, their APIs and who holds admin access.
- Developer accountsRegister them in your company’s name; organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number for verification.
- TestingNew personal Google Play developer accounts need a closed test with opted-in testers before production release.
- AccessKeep developer accounts, signing access and code repositories in your business’s name.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline?
The scope determines how much design, backend work and testing the app needs.
User roles
Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions.
Backend
An existing backend with a documented API saves work; building a backend and admin panel from scratch adds it.
Live features
Tracking and chat need persistent connections and more backend work than screens that load data on request.
Integrations
Payment gateways, booking systems and hardware each need setup, testing and failure handling.
Screen design
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price: the work depends on what the app must do. Showing previously loaded information offline is a smaller task than allowing offline edits and resolving sync conflicts. Notifications also need a sending service, recipient rules and settings for the categories users want.
How do I choose an app developer?
Ask how the developer will design the screens and handle access to the app. We design flows around iOS and Android conventions. For an app without significant account-based features, allowing people to use it before signing in is also worth discussing during design.
What is included in the app build?
We build the backend and APIs for accounts, data, notifications and admin tools. We also set up push notifications and can include in-app purchases or subscriptions on both stores. Tell us which of those features users need in the first release so they can be included in the scope.
Who owns the app and its code?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Ask about handover as part of the project: your team should know where the code is held and how to access the domain. That gives you a practical route to continue work on the product later.
What support does an app need after launch?
Plan for bug fixes, operating-system updates and new features. Google Play also requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level, so maintenance releases need to be part of the plan. Look at retention and crash-free rate to assess how people use each release.
