Choosing
Should you build a cross-platform app or go native?
For an app centred on accounts, bookings, forms, payments or content, a cross-platform build is often a practical choice. React Native shares most of the code across iOS and Android while rendering each platform’s own interface components. Some logic can also be shared with a React web app, which is useful if your existing product uses that technology.
Native development suits an app that depends on deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. The trade-off is separate codebases in Swift and Kotlin, with more code to build and maintain. We recommend the approach after considering what the app needs to do on the device.
A progressive web app is another option for a staff tool. It avoids app store review, although it will not appear in the stores unless packaged for them. On an iPhone, it can ask to send notifications only after the user adds it to the Home Screen. That limitation belongs in the decision if alerts are central to the task.
Local
What Brighton organisations need from an app
Brighton’s retail businesses have repeat customers who may want to reorder, use loyalty benefits and keep payment details for a quicker checkout. A shop considering an app should map that checkout alongside the notification it plans to send. Creative and digital businesses with an established web platform can also reuse its accounts and data when customers need frequent access on a phone.
The local tourism industry includes organisations whose field teams need to record work away from the office. An app for those staff needs forms, photos, signatures and job locations that remain usable without a signal. Syncing the records when a connection returns gives the office access to the work completed in the field.
Rules
What a UK app project has to handle
Your app and website can share a backend. If the website uses cookies solely for statistics or appearance preferences without consent, we set up clear information and an easy way for users to object. For an app that lets people create accounts, we also set up a way to start account deletion inside the app. Google Play additionally requires a web link where people can request deletion of the account and its associated data.
How it runs
How an app project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 5h30m ahead of the UK, or 4h30m during British Summer Time. The shared board gives you a place to leave feedback and follow work across that difference.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, audience and goals, then agree the scope with you. Bring the main task you want people to complete.
- 02
Design
We design iOS and Android screens and refine them with your feedback before writing code. You can check the flow while changes are still on the screen.
- 03
Prototype
Put the clickable design in front of customers or staff. Their feedback can reveal a confusing screen before it becomes more expensive to change.
- 04
Test
We provide builds for your phone through TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. You can try the app in use and tell us what needs attention.
- 05
Release
We handle the store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain access to the accounts used for publication.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
A few practical details will help us discuss the scope.
- First releaseList the tasks users must complete, in the order they will do them.
- Connected systemsNote your website, booking software, CRM and payment provider, including API availability and who holds admin access.
- Developer accountsStart registering Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name; organisation verification needs a D-U-N-S number.
- TestingCheck the closed-testing requirement if you plan to use a new personal Google Play developer account.
- DevicesIdentify the iOS and Android devices your users need the screens and flows to work on.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline
The work behind each screen changes the scope.
Admin tools
Staff may need screens to edit content, find customers, issue refunds or block accounts alongside the app and backend.
Offline editing
Saving changes without signal and resolving conflicts on sync takes more work than showing previously loaded data.
Notifications
Sending needs a service, audience and timing rules, plus settings for the categories users can switch off.
Interface variants
Custom animation, extra languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.
User content
Posts need filtering, reporting and blocking tools, as well as published contact details.
Questions

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an app?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the number of user roles, whether an existing backend has a documented API, and features such as live tracking or chat. Each role needs its own screens and permissions. We agree the scope with you before preparing a quote.
How do I choose a company to develop my app?
Choose a team that can explain what people will do in the app and how that differs from using your website. A site wrapped in an app shell risks store rejection. Also ask how users will see value before signing up: apps without significant account-based features should allow use without login.
What should be included in the first release?
Include the main user task, a way to understand usage and crash reporting. We can also build in-app purchases and subscriptions when the product needs them. Ask for notification permission when its benefit is clear, such as after an order, instead of presenting the request as soon as the app opens.
Will I own the app code?
Yes. You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep the code repository and signing access in your business’s name too. Accounts held by an agency or freelancer can make the app harder to move, so agree where these assets will be held before development starts.
What happens after the app launches?
Ongoing support covers bug fixes, updates for new iOS and Android versions, and new features. Plan maintenance releases for Google Play’s Android API requirements. Track how many people return and where they leave the main task, alongside the crash-free rate, to see how a release is performing in use.
