Choosing
Which platform should you choose for your store?
Shopify is the simplest option to run when you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. Apps add features, though their subscriptions add to the ongoing cost. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan. WooCommerce suits a team already working with WordPress. We recommend a platform after understanding your products and operations.
A headless or custom storefront suits an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a content-led brand. A Next.js storefront connected to a commerce back end gives you more room to shape the experience, but takes more build effort and most later changes need a developer. That extra work should support a specific requirement in your catalogue or checkout.
Your own store and marketplaces can work together. A marketplace brings ready traffic but sets the rules and keeps the customer relationship; your own store keeps customer data and margin, while you are responsible for attracting visitors. If you sell across countries, also plan currencies, market prices, duties, translations and shipping options before choosing the platform.
Local
What Chennai businesses need from an online store
Chennai has industries spanning automobiles, hardware, software services, healthcare and financial services. A wholesaler or distributor serving those sectors may need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests and ordering on account. For a maker selling configurable products, the catalogue may also need choices that go beyond standard variants, with file uploads, previews or price rules.
Chennai is also an educational centre. An educational organisation selling materials through messages could use a catalogue, online payment and order tracking so orders do not have to be handled by hand in chat. A retailer with a physical shop needs a different set-up: stock connected to its till system and an option for customers to collect their purchases.
Rules
What an Indian e-commerce store has to handle
An e-commerce entity must prominently display its legal name, principal geographic address, website details, customer-care contact details and grievance officer contact details. We set up space for those details on the store, so customers can find the right contact information.
GST treatment differs between supplies within a state and supplies between states. Your store therefore needs tax rules that reflect the products and locations you sell to. We configure those rules in the store alongside the checkout and shipping settings.
How it runs
How an e-commerce project runs with us
We work remotely from India using video calls, WhatsApp and a shared project board. You can review the work and discuss decisions with us without needing to meet in person.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals. You tell us how orders are handled today, and we agree the scope of the store together.
- 02
Design
We prepare product, collection and checkout page designs for desktop and mobile. You review them and give feedback before any code is written.
- 03
Import
We add a small product sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images, then we use the corrected format for the full catalogue.
- 04
Build and test
We build the agreed store, including an editable CMS where appropriate, and test it on real devices and browsers. You review the working pages.
- 05
Launch and care
We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support. You can use the store and its admin for day-to-day work.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather these details so we can discuss the store around your actual products and operations.
- A product spreadsheet with names, descriptions, prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
- Original product photos with consistent backgrounds and aspect ratios, several angles and an image for each colour variant.
- Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies for shoppers and payment-provider checks.
- Business registration, bank details and identity documents for a payment account in your business’s name. Apply early; the provider decides approval.
- Your delivery areas, couriers, charges and cash-on-delivery decision, plus product tax decisions checked with your accountant.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of e-commerce development
The work involved depends on the catalogue, the design and the systems the store has to connect.
Catalogue complexity
Variants, engraving, bundles and products sold by weight or length need more detailed set-up.
Design approach
Adapting an existing theme is smaller work than creating a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.
Integrations
An order export to accounting is smaller work than synchronising stock and prices with an ERP or several marketplaces.
Checkout and markets
Delivery-date choices, wholesale prices and customer-specific catalogues add rules, as do markets with their own currencies, languages and tax settings.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with e-commerce development
Unauthenticated order emails
Set up SPF or DKIM for the sending domain to help keep messages out of spam.
Too many apps
Review what each app or plugin does and remove unused ones; extra scripts, conflicts and recurring fees can accumulate.
Late delivery charges
Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers see costs before the final checkout step.
Heavy product pages
Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Chennai
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does an e-commerce website cost?
There is no fixed price. The size and variants in your catalogue, the connections to systems such as accounting or marketplaces, and the extent of any migration all affect the work. Migration can include customers, order history and reviews as well as products. Once we have agreed the scope, ask us for a quote.
Which payment gateway should I choose?
Choose a gateway that supports your business registration, selling currencies and the payment methods your customers need. We support Stripe, Razorpay, PayPal and local gateways, according to the country and platform. Compare settlement timing and the way refunds and disputes are handled before opening the account.
Can you move my existing store?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. For a move, map each old product and category URL to its closest new page using permanent server-side redirects. That includes planning where an old link should lead when a product is no longer sold.
What else is included in the store?
The work can include branded transactional emails and product-page structured data. Order confirmations, dispatch messages with tracking links, refunds and password resets need wording that matches your policies and a sender on your own domain. Structured data makes product pages eligible for rich results in search.
Will I own my store after launch?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep those assets under your control as you plan the handover and decide who will look after the store and its future changes.
What should we monitor after launch?
Compare conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed with your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change. Give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
