What it does

An XML sitemap generator turns a plain list of page addresses into the sitemap.xml file that search engines read to discover your pages. Paste full URLs or relative paths, set a last-modified date, and the valid XML appears on the right with every special character escaped. Duplicates are removed, broken lines are reported, and the file can be copied or downloaded. It is meant for small and medium sites, or for a one-off sitemap of a section that your CMS does not cover.

How to use it

  1. Paste your URLs, one per line. Export them from your CMS, a crawl or a spreadsheet.
  2. Set the base URL if any lines are relative paths such as /about.
  3. Keep lastmod on and set the date. Leave changefreq and priority off unless you need them.
  4. Check the stats for invalid lines or more than one host.
  5. Download sitemap.xml, upload it to the site root and submit it in Search Console.

How to read the result

The URLs stat is the number of valid, unique addresses in the file. Six lines pasted with one duplicate gives "5" and the hint "1 duplicate removed". The Problems stat counts lines that could not be parsed as a URL, for example "contact" without a leading slash or a line with a space in it. Those lines are listed below so you can fix them at the source.

If the hint says "2 different hosts", some URLs point to a different domain or subdomain. A sitemap may only list URLs from the host it is served on, so split those out into their own file.

Each entry in the XML has a loc element and, when enabled, a lastmod. A sitemap of 5 URLs with dates comes to about 600 bytes, far below the 50 MB limit. The URL count turns red above 50,000, at which point you need several sitemap files and a sitemap index that lists them.

Make sure robots.txt points to the file; the robots.txt generator adds the line for you. Larger sites with generated sitemaps are covered by our technical SEO service.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Do I need changefreq and priority?

No. Google has said for years that it ignores both and relies on lastmod when it is accurate. Bing also gives them little weight. The tool leaves them off by default. Turn them on only if another system you feed expects them, and never use priority to try to boost a page.

What should lastmod be?

The date the page content last changed in a meaningful way, in YYYY-MM-DD format. Setting every page to today's date on every build is worse than leaving it out, because Google learns the value is noise and stops trusting it. Use the real edit date from your CMS where you can.

Where do I submit the sitemap?

Upload it to your site, usually at /sitemap.xml, then add the URL in Google Search Console under Sitemaps and in Bing Webmaster Tools. Also reference it in robots.txt with a Sitemap line so any crawler can find it without being told.
