What it does

A URL slug generator turns a headline into the last part of a web address. It lowercases the text, strips punctuation and accents, replaces spaces with hyphens and optionally removes stop words such as "the" and "of". You can set a maximum length and the slug is cut at a word boundary so it never ends mid-word. Paste several headlines, one per line, to convert a whole content calendar in one go.

How to use it

  1. Paste a headline, or several on separate lines.
  2. Leave the separator on hyphen unless your platform requires something else.
  3. Keep "Remove stop words" on for shorter slugs; turn it off if the slug reads badly without them.
  4. Set a maximum length if your CMS or style guide has one.
  5. Copy the slug, or the list, with the copy button.

How to read the result

The headline "10 Things to Know Before You Redesign Your Company's Website (2026 Edition)" becomes "10-things-know-before-redesign-companys-website-2026-edition" with stop words removed. That is 60 characters and nine words, which fits under the 75-character guide but is longer than it needs to be. Trimming the source to "Redesign your company website: 10 things to know" gives "redesign-company-website-10-things-know", 39 characters and six words, which is easier to read in a search result and in a shared link.

The length stat turns amber above 75 characters. Nothing breaks at that point, but long slugs get cut in search results and are harder to type. The word count is a hint: three to six words usually captures the topic without padding.

Apostrophes are removed rather than replaced, so "company's" becomes "companys". If that bothers you, rewrite the source without the possessive.

Changing a slug on a live page needs a redirect, which the 301 redirect generator can write for you. For site-wide URL cleanups, see our technical SEO service.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Hyphens or underscores in URLs?

Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator and an underscore as a joiner, so red-shoes is read as two words while red_shoes is one. Hyphens are also easier to read when the URL is printed or spoken. Most CMS platforms default to hyphens for this reason.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

Usually, as long as the slug still makes sense. "how-to-choose-a-cms" becomes "how-choose-cms", which is shorter and still clear. If removing a word changes the meaning, keep it. The tool keeps all words if removing stop words would leave nothing.

Can I change a slug after a page is live?

You can, but every change needs a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one, or you lose the links and rankings the old page earned. Pick a slug you are happy with before publishing, and treat changes to live URLs as a project, not a quick edit.
