Markdown to HTML conversion turns the plain-text shorthand you write in README files, Notion exports and chat apps into the HTML a web page needs. Paste Markdown on the left and the HTML appears on the right, with a rendered preview above it so you can check that headings, lists and tables came out as intended. The converter runs entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and you can copy the fragment or download a complete HTML document with the head and body already in place.
How to use it
- Paste or type your Markdown in the left panel. The sample shows headings, a list, a quote and a table.
- Check the preview. It uses the same styles as our blog, so what you see is close to what a reader gets.
- Tick "Wrap in a full HTML document" if you need a standalone file rather than a fragment to paste into a CMS.
- Copy the HTML or download it as a file.
How to read the result
The two stats tell you how much markup was produced. The 312-character sample, with a heading, a numbered list, a quote and a small table, becomes 522 bytes of HTML with 23 elements. That growth is normal; tags are verbose compared with Markdown's symbols.
In the output, a line starting with a hash becomes an h1, two hashes an h2 and so on. A numbered list becomes an ol with li children, and a table becomes a table with a thead and tbody, which is what screen readers and search engines expect. Fenced code blocks turn into pre and code elements with a language class, so a syntax highlighter can pick them up.
If something in the preview looks wrong, the cause is almost always a missing blank line. Markdown needs an empty line before a heading, list or table to separate it from the paragraph above.
For content-heavy sites we usually wire Markdown or MDX straight into the build; see website design and development. The HTML to Markdown converter does the reverse job.
Questions
Frequently asked.
Does it support tables and task lists?
Yes. The converter uses GitHub Flavored Markdown, so pipe tables, task lists, strikethrough and bare URLs are all recognised. Standard Markdown features such as headings, lists, links, images, blockquotes and fenced code blocks work as you would expect.
Why are my single line breaks ignored?
Standard Markdown joins lines inside a paragraph, the same way HTML does. A blank line starts a new paragraph. If you want every line break to become a br tag, as on GitHub comments or in chat apps, tick the "Treat single line breaks as br" option.
Is the HTML safe to paste into my site?
The output is exactly what the Markdown describes, including any raw HTML you typed. If the text comes from someone you do not trust, run it through a sanitiser on the server before publishing. The preview here strips script tags and event handlers, but the copyable code does not.
