What it does

HTML to Markdown conversion takes a page's markup and produces the plain-text format used by documentation sites, static site generators and most editors. Paste a chunk of HTML copied from a browser, a WordPress export or an email template, and the Markdown appears on the right ready to copy or download. Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, links, images, lists, blockquotes, code blocks and basic tables are all handled. Scripts and styles are dropped, because they have no Markdown equivalent.

How to use it

  1. Paste the HTML. A whole page is fine; the converter only keeps what carries content.
  2. Pick a heading style. Hash headings are the safe default; underlined headings only exist for the first two levels.
  3. Pick a bullet marker to match the style guide of the project you are moving content into.
  4. Copy the Markdown, or download it as a .md file.

How to read the result

The stats compare the two versions. The 16-line HTML sample becomes 22 lines and 55 words of Markdown. The line count grows because Markdown puts a blank line between blocks, while the characters shrink, since closing tags and wrappers vanish.

Read through the output once. Links keep their text and URL in the usual bracket form. Images become an exclamation mark, the alt text and the source URL, so an image with no alt text shows up as empty brackets, which is a good moment to add one. A table converts to pipes with a dashed separator row; if the columns look uneven, that is just the plain-text view and renders fine.

Watch for text that was styled with spans or divs in the original. The styling is gone, but the words remain, which is usually what you want when migrating content.

This is the first step in most of our CMS migrations into Next.js; see website design and development. To go the other way, use Markdown to HTML.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Why did some of my HTML disappear?

Script and style blocks are removed on purpose, since Markdown has no way to express them. Elements that Markdown cannot describe, such as div wrappers, forms and iframes, lose their tags but keep any text inside. If you need those elements kept verbatim, leave them as raw HTML in the Markdown afterwards.

Can it convert tables?

Simple tables convert to GitHub-style pipe tables, one row per line with a separator under the header. Cells that span rows or columns are flattened, and nested tables or block content inside cells will not survive. For complex layouts, keep the table as HTML inside your Markdown.

Which Markdown flavour does it produce?

CommonMark with the common GitHub extensions. Headings use hash marks by default, code blocks are fenced with three backticks, emphasis uses underscores and bullets use dashes. All of these are read correctly by GitHub, GitLab, Notion, Obsidian and most static site generators.
