What it does

A case converter takes a phrase and rewrites it in every naming style you are likely to need, so you can copy the right one instead of retyping it. Paste a variable name, a heading or a list of column names and you get camelCase, PascalCase, snake_case, SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE, kebab-case, dot.case, path/case, Title Case, Sentence case and plain upper and lower case, each with its own copy button. Each line of input is converted on its own, which makes it useful for renaming a batch of fields at once.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the text. Put one name or phrase per line if you have several.
  2. The converter splits the text into words, recognising spaces, punctuation, underscores, hyphens and capital letters inside existing camelCase.
  3. Find the style you need in the list on the right and press Copy.
  4. Paste it into your editor, spreadsheet or database schema, and repeat for any other style you need.

How to read the result

Take the sample line "customer order total". It becomes customerOrderTotal for a JavaScript variable, CustomerOrderTotal for a class name, customer_order_total for a database column, CUSTOMER_ORDER_TOTAL for a constant and customer-order-total for a URL slug or CSS class. Title Case gives "Customer Order Total" for a heading, and Sentence case gives "Customer order total" for a button label or form field.

The word count stat tells you how many words the converter found. If it is lower than expected, the input probably contains an abbreviation in capitals such as "URL" or "ID"; a run of capitals is kept together as one word, so "customerID" becomes "customer id" rather than "customer i d".

Digits stay attached to the word they follow, so "item2" remains one word. Accented letters and Arabic letters count as letters, so names in those scripts convert cleanly.

Consistent naming is one of the first things we fix when taking over a codebase; see web app development. For URL slugs that also strip accents and stop words, use the URL slug generator.

Questions

Frequently asked.

When should I use camelCase versus snake_case?

Follow the language. JavaScript and TypeScript use camelCase for variables and PascalCase for classes and components. Python, Ruby and most SQL databases use snake_case. Environment variables and constants are SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE. URLs and CSS classes use kebab-case because hyphens are safe in both.

Why are some words left lowercase in Title Case?

Most style guides keep short joining words such as "a", "and", "of" and "to" in lowercase unless they start or end the title. That is what the Title Case output does. If you want every word capitalised regardless, use the "Capitalized Words" line instead.

Can it convert an existing camelCase name to kebab-case?

Yes. The converter first breaks any input into words, recognising capital letters, underscores, hyphens and dots as boundaries. So "customerOrderTotal" becomes the words "customer order total", and from there every output style is available, including kebab-case and Title Case.
