All other letters use their usual English values (ب b, ت t, ج j, د d, ر r, ز z, س s, ف f, ك k, ل l, م m, ن n). Most Arabic text is written without short vowels, so مدينة gives mdina, not madina. Add the vowel marks, or edit the slug by hand, when the spelling matters.

What it does

This tool turns Arabic headlines into URL slugs, the part of a web address after the last slash. It gives two versions of every title side by side. The Arabic slug keeps the Arabic letters, removes the diacritics (the short-vowel marks U+064B to U+0652), the tatweel stretching character and punctuation, and joins the words with hyphens. The Latin slug transliterates the title into plain letters and digits that work everywhere.

Paste several titles, one per line, to convert a whole set of pages at once. Arabic-Indic digits (٠ to ٩) can be turned into 0 to 9, common short words such as في and من can be removed, and you can set a maximum length that cuts at a word boundary.

How to use it

  1. Paste one or more Arabic titles, each on its own line.
  2. Choose the main output: Arabic slug or Latin slug.
  3. For Latin slugs, choose the Simple scheme or Arabizi.
  4. Keep the hyphen separator; Google recommends hyphens over underscores to mark word boundaries.
  5. Copy the slugs from the output box, or read both versions in the table.

How to read the result

"Characters you see" is the length of the first Arabic slug as it appears in the address bar. "Characters when encoded" is the same slug percent-encoded, which is what servers, analytics tools and some social apps count. Every Arabic letter becomes six characters, so a 40-letter slug is roughly 240 characters encoded. The stat turns amber above 200 as a nudge to shorten it.

The Latin slug follows the letter table under the tool. Most Arabic is written without short vowels, so the transliteration can only spell what is written: مدينة becomes mdina, while the fully marked مَدِينَة becomes madina. The letters و and ي are read as vowels (u, i) between consonants and as w and y elsewhere. Treat the Latin slug as a starting point and correct the spelling of names and brands by hand, for example dubai rather than dbi.

"Write أ إ آ as ا" makes Arabic slugs consistent when different writers type the hamza differently. Leave it off if the spelling must match the title exactly.

Once a slug is live, changing it needs a redirect, so settle the format before launch. For English titles, the URL slug generator does the same job. Planning the URL structure, hreflang and right-to-left templates for a bilingual site is part of our Arabic and multilingual website service.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Should Arabic pages use Arabic or Latin slugs?

Both work. Arabic slugs match what Arabic searchers type and read naturally in the address bar. Latin slugs stay short and readable when the link is pasted into email or chat apps that show the encoded form. Pick one and use it for every Arabic page, so the site stays consistent.

Why does my Arabic URL turn into %D8%... when I copy it?

Browsers show Arabic letters in the address bar, but the URL itself carries them percent-encoded. Each Arabic letter is two bytes in UTF-8, so it becomes six characters such as %D8%B9. Google's URL guidance asks for the percent-encoded form in the URLs you publish, so use that version in sitemaps, canonical and hreflang tags.

Which transliteration scheme does the tool use?

The Simple scheme uses the consonant values of the ALA-LC romanisation with the dots and macrons dropped, so it stays plain ASCII: ح and ه are both h, ص and س both s, ة is a and al- is kept as written. Arabizi uses the same letters plus 2, 3 and 7 for ء, ع and ح. The full table is under the tool.
