Choosing
Should you use a theme or a headless storefront?
A theme is a practical route when your team wants to use Shopify’s theme editor. Apps can add features quickly, but each app brings a recurring fee, extra scripts and a reliance on its maker. Custom code or a custom app can fit a specific requirement more closely, with maintenance needed as Shopify changes.
Shopify runs the checkout. Standard checkout customisation is available from the Basic plan, while apps that change the information, shipping and payment steps are limited to Shopify Plus. If your buying flow is unusual or your brand is heavily content-led, a headless storefront using Hydrogen or Next.js is an option. You give up the theme editor, though, and some apps that add features through a theme may not work.
For selling across countries, one store can use markets for local-currency pricing, translations and international domains. Separate stores fit businesses that need different catalogues or teams for each country, or payouts in different currencies. The choice changes what your staff manage, so bring your catalogue and payout requirements into the scope discussion.
Market
What shoppers in India expect
Customers can pay merchants through UPI, so tell us if you want to offer it when we configure your payment gateway. Compare the total cost per order across gateways: a third-party gateway carries an extra Shopify transaction fee, even when Shopify Payments is active. Your payment choice affects the checkout setup as well as your running costs.
Your sales model also shapes the store. A direct-to-consumer brand might need subscriptions, reviews and email flows connected to store data. A retailer with physical shops might need online and in-store stock in one system, using Shopify’s point-of-sale app alongside the online store. Tell us how your staff currently manage stock and orders.
Rules
What a Shopify project in India has to handle
GST treatment differs between intra-state and inter-state supplies. We configure the store’s tax settings for the market you sell in, using the details of your products and supplies to shape the setup. Have those details ready when you discuss the catalogue and fulfilment with us.
E-commerce entities must prominently display their legal name, principal geographic address, website details, and contact details for customer care and their grievance officer. We set up the relevant store pages to display those details. You provide the business information and the contacts you want customers to use.
How it runs
How a Shopify development project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. You can bring your catalogue, questions and feedback into those conversations as the store takes shape.
- 01
Discover
We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. This gives us a shared view of what needs to be built.
- 02
Arrange access
The store stays in your account. You approve our collaborator account, choose its permissions and can remove them when needed.
- 03
Build and review
We work on an unpublished copy of the theme. You preview and approve it before publication, while the live store continues trading.
- 04
Launch
We connect the domain, remove the store password, switch payments to live and import redirects. We also place a real test order and refund it.
- 05
Hand over
Your team learns to run orders, products and discounts before handover. That gives the people managing the shop practice with its everyday tasks.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Bring product details such as dimensions, care instructions and size charts; these can be stored in metafields and displayed in their own theme sections.
- A Shopify account and plan in your business’s name, with its own billing.
- A product sheet with titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, barcodes, weights, options and stock per location. Weights feed calculated shipping rates.
- Business and bank details for your payment gateway, plus your shipping, returns, privacy and terms policies. Review generated templates before use.
- A list of current and planned tools, such as reviews, subscriptions, accounting and couriers, with what each must do.
- For a migration, exports of products, customers and orders, plus the URLs bringing the most traffic and sales.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and build time
A migration can include products, customers, orders and redirects; agree which parts you need moved before the work is scoped.
Theme route
Adjusting an existing theme is a smaller piece of work than designing and building a custom theme around your brand.
Catalogue structure
Bundles, made-to-order choices, extra product options and metafield-driven specifications add setup and theme work.
Migration depth
Moving products alone is lighter than also moving customer records, order history, reviews, gift cards and redirects.
Integrations and markets
ERP, accounting, warehouse or marketplace connections add work, especially with two-way stock and price sync. Extra markets also bring their own prices, translations and shipping rates.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with Shopify development
Missing redirects
Shopify uses fixed product and collection paths. Map old URLs to new ones and import the redirects at launch; redirects work only from URLs that no longer load a page.
Too many apps
Apps can add page scripts and subscriptions. Check the theme files when removing one, as code can remain after uninstalling it.
Editing the live theme
A mistake is immediately visible to visitors. Duplicate the theme, preview your changes and publish the copy after review.
Inconsistent product data
Loose tags, product types and vendors can put products in the wrong collections or hide them from filters. Keep those fields consistent.
Questions
Asked by businesses in India
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The main drivers include a custom theme, product choices beyond Shopify’s standard options and special back-end rules. Shopify allows up to three product options; an additional choice such as engraving needs theme properties or an app. Discount, delivery or checkout rules can also require Shopify Functions.
Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?
Yes. We handle design, development and launch with the same team. A first-time online seller can have a store that staff can run without managing hosting, security or software updates. We also train your team to manage products, orders and discounts as part of the handover.
Should my collections be manual or automated?
Choose manual collections when your staff need to pick each product. Automated collections suit a catalogue with consistent product data: conditions such as tags, product type, vendor or price keep the collection current. Before choosing automation, look at how reliably those fields are maintained across your catalogue.
Who owns the store after it is built?
You own your domain, content and code. Your store is not locked to the team that built it, so ownership stays with you after handover. Keep those assets under your business’s control when deciding who will maintain the store and make future changes.
Can you support the store after launch?
Yes. Ongoing support follows launch from the same people who designed and built the store. Your own access review is useful too: check installed apps, staff accounts and collaborator access from time to time, and remove anything no longer used. Shopify also expires collaborator access that goes unused.
How can I see how the store is performing?
Use Shopify’s reports alongside Search Console. Shopify reports show conversion rate, cart abandonment, average order value and returning customers. Search Console shows organic clicks and product-page indexing. These give you separate views of what happens in the store and how product pages appear in search.
