Choosing
Should you build for iPhone first or plan for Android too?
Start with your audience. If your website analytics or customer surveys show that most of the people you want to reach carry iPhones, an iPhone-first release gives you a clear place to start. Check your own data before deciding: the platform choice affects the build, and an assumption about your customers’ devices is a weak basis for the scope.
Native Swift with SwiftUI suits an iPhone-only product, especially one built around Apple features such as widgets, Apple Watch or HealthKit. We also build cross-platform apps when the product needs them. A native iPhone build gives you an Apple-focused codebase, while adding Android afterwards calls for a separate build.
Decide what iPad users need too. You could use a scaled-up iPhone layout, or commission a dedicated layout with side-by-side panes. The latter suits work at a desk or counter, such as ordering or field reporting, but adds layout decisions to the project. Think about the task your users will carry out on each device before settling on the screens.
Market
What buyers in the United States expect at checkout
Give checkout a clear purpose. Apple requires in-app purchase for digital content, features and subscriptions used inside the app. Physical goods and services used outside it need another payment method, such as Apple Pay or card entry. Some storefronts also allow links to outside payment options. Stripe lists the United States as a country where businesses can sign up to accept payments. Tell us what you sell before checkout is scoped, so the purchase flow reflects the product and the payment route available for it.
Rules
What a public-sector iOS app has to handle
For a state or local government app, the accessibility target affects screen design and testing. The ADA Title II rule requires these mobile apps to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We design screens with support for larger text and VoiceOver labels, and plan the accessibility work against that target. Familiar navigation and system controls give users a consistent way to move through the app as they complete a task.
How it runs
How an iOS app development project runs with us
We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India time is 10h30m (Eastern) to 13h30m (Pacific) ahead of the mainland US in winter. The shared board keeps project decisions visible between calls, so you can review work and leave feedback across the time difference.

Discover
You tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before moving into design.
- 02
Design
We design the screens and flows around Apple’s guidelines. You review how people will move through the app and complete its tasks.
- 03
Test builds
We use TestFlight to put development builds on your own iPhone. Friendly customers can join as external testers after Apple reviews the first beta build.
- 04
Prepare for review
If the app has a login, provide a working demo account and keep the backend live. Check for placeholder text, test content, broken links and crashes.
- 05
Release
We prepare the App Store listing, submit the app for review and fix anything raised in a rejection. You review the listing material before submission.
- 06
Manage updates
A phased release gives an update to a growing share of automatic-update users. It can be paused if crash reports rise.
Checklist
What to have ready before we talk
Gather test access for booking, CRM or payment systems the app needs to connect with, so development builds do not touch live customer data.
- Seller nameChoose the account type. An organisation account displays the company name; an individual account displays the person’s legal name.
- Privacy policyPrepare a policy link for App Store Connect and the app, covering collection, sharing and deletion requests.
- Listing materialGather your app name, subtitle, keywords, description, supported-device screenshots and support URL. A preview video is optional.
- Digital salesIdentify subscriptions or premium content early, as this decides whether in-app purchase needs to be built.
- Data detailsList what the app and its third-party SDKs collect for the privacy answers shown on the store listing.
Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of iOS app development
The scope sets the amount of design, build and testing work involved.
Purchases and subscriptions
Product setup, server-side purchase checks, restoring purchases, upgrades and refund handling all add work.
Device features
Bluetooth, NFC, camera scanning and background location need more build and testing effort than standard screens.
Android plans
Planning for Android later favours a cross-platform build now; a Swift-only app needs a second codebase for Android.
Backend and admin panel
These can match the app itself in size. An existing backend with a documented API reduces the work on both.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid with iOS app development
Wrapping a website
Apple’s guidelines ask an app to offer more than a repackaged site. Define the useful app experience before treating an app shell as the scope.
Sending promotions without consent
Promotional push notifications need an explicit opt-in inside the app and an in-app way to opt out. Include both in the notification flow.
Asking for permissions too soon
Explain why the app needs location, camera, contacts or photos when the request has context. A vague prompt at first launch gives people little reason to accept.

Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to pay someone to develop an iOS app?
There is no fixed price: the work depends on what you include. Connecting accounts, data and notifications to your systems adds to the scope, as do extras such as a Watch app, Wallet passes or HealthKit. Agree the scope before requesting a quote, so it reflects the features you actually need.
How should I choose a mobile app development company?
Ask how the team will handle the decisions your app creates. For example, if its main sign-in uses a third-party login, ask about an equivalent privacy-preserving option such as Sign in with Apple. Also ask what people can use before signing in if the app has no significant account-based features.
What should an iOS app development scope include?
It should cover the iPhone app and the supporting work needed to run and release it. Set out the decision on iPad support, the backend for accounts and data, any admin panel your staff need, and App Store Connect setup for testing, the listing and release.
Can we distribute an app only to our staff?
Yes. An app for your organisation’s own staff can be distributed privately as a custom app through Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, instead of being listed publicly. This suits work on company-issued iPhones or iPads, such as inspections, sales visits or stock checks.
Who owns the app code and content?
You own your code, content and domain, with no lock-in. Keep those ownership arrangements in mind when agreeing the scope, alongside the material you will provide for the app. You retain ownership of those assets after the work is delivered.
What support does an iOS app need after launch?
We handle updates for new iOS versions, bug fixes and new features after launch. Even a stable app needs attention before a later update: Apple periodically raises the minimum Xcode and SDK versions for uploads, so the app needs rebuilding and retesting before that update can ship.
