Choosing

Which ecommerce platform should you choose?

Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled by the platform. You can add features through apps, though app subscriptions add recurring costs and deeper checkout changes are limited to Shopify Plus. WooCommerce suits a team already working on WordPress. We recommend a platform after learning about your products and operations, so the choice reflects what your team needs to manage.

A custom or headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, suits an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a brand with substantial editorial content. It takes more build effort, and later changes generally need a developer. If you sell into several countries, you also need decisions on market prices, currencies, duties, translated content and shipping; some platforms handle more of this in their core product than others.

You can also keep selling through marketplaces alongside your own store and sync stock between them. A marketplace brings traffic but controls its rules and customer relationship; your own store gives you control of customer data and margin, with the task of attracting visitors yourself.

Local

What Yukon businesses need from an online shop

Mining is a major industry in Yukon. If you supply configurable or made-to-order products to that sector, the store needs to capture choices clearly before an order reaches your team. We organise products into collections and decide which attributes become filters or variants, with the right price, stock, SKU and image attached to each choice. More involved orders might need file uploads or price rules.

Tourism is another major sector. If your tourism business sells products through social media or messages, a catalogue and online payment give customers a place to order without arranging every detail in chat. The store also needs order tracking, customer accounts and clear policy pages, while your team needs an admin area where it can handle those orders day to day.

Rules

What a Canadian ecommerce project needs to handle

The GST or HST rate charged can depend on the place of supply, such as where goods are delivered. We configure tax rules and checkout settings around the applicable destinations and the tax decisions you provide. Test the settings against your intended delivery areas before launch.

If your store publishes commercial content for customers in Quebec, that content needs to be available in French. We set up French versions of the relevant commercial pages, including product content, so you can supply and maintain the wording alongside your other store content.

How it runs

How an ecommerce project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 12h30m ahead of Yukon, so the shared board gives both sides a place to leave decisions and feedback for the other team to pick up across the time difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the store scope with you. Bring the ordering and fulfilment tasks your team handles today.

  2. 02

    Design

We prepare desktop and mobile page designs and refine them with your feedback before coding. During the build, we test on real devices and browsers.

  3. 03

    Import

We load a small product sample first. You check titles, variants, prices and images before the full catalogue goes in, so corrections happen in the template.

  4. 04

    Test

You place orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the order records in the admin.

  5. 05

    Launch and care

We set up the domain, email, analytics and search, followed by ongoing support. Your team has the store setup in place for day-to-day use.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather these details so we can scope the store around your products and operations.

  • Product photosKeep original files, with consistent backgrounds and images for each colour variant.
  • PoliciesPrepare plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms pages.
  • Gateway documentsHave registration, bank and identity details ready; open the account in your business name.
  • Tax and delivery decisionsCheck applicable taxes with your accountant and decide your couriers, areas and charges.
  • Account accessGather domain, DNS, website, email, analytics and Google logins held in your business name.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline

The work involved changes with your catalogue, design, data and connections.

  • Catalogue

Variants, bundles, custom options and products sold by weight or length add decisions to the build.

  • Product data

A clean spreadsheet is simpler to import than details scattered across supplier files and messages.

  • Design

Adapting a theme takes less work than creating a custom design around unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Integrations

A basic accounting export is smaller work than synchronising stock and prices with an ERP or marketplaces.

  • Migration

Moving customers, orders and other records adds scope; existing customers usually need a password reset.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid

  • Testing only in sandbox mode

Place a real low-value order with live payment settings, then refund it to check the payment connection, currency and emails.

  • Sending from an unauthenticated domain

Set up SPF or DKIM for store emails to reduce the risk of messages landing in spam.

  • Adding an app for every small feature

Review what each app does and remove unused ones; scripts, conflicts and recurring fees can accumulate.

  • Leaving delivery charges and taxes until the end

Show estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers can see likely costs earlier.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Yukon

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does an ecommerce website cost to develop?

There is no fixed price. Catalogue imports and the number of variants affect the work, as do connections to accounting, ERP, email and marketplace tools. We need to understand which products and systems are in scope before a quote can reflect the store you want built.

Can you move my existing store?

Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Plan the old product and category URLs as part of the move: permanent redirects should point each old address to its closest new page, including when a product has been dropped.

Which payment gateway should I use?

The choice depends on where your business is registered, the currencies you sell in and your platform. We support Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay and local gateways as applicable; Stripe lists Canada for business sign-up. We set up the selected gateway and consider payment methods, settlement, refunds and disputes with you.

What happens to order emails and payment tests?

We account for both in the store build. Payment testing covers paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders, including their stock and order records. Transactional emails cover confirmations, dispatch tracking, refunds, abandoned carts and password resets, with your branding, domain sender and wording that reflects your policies.

Will I own the store after launch?

You own your domain, content and code. That gives you control of those assets without being locked to the team that built the store. Keep the relevant accounts in your business name and make sure your team has access to the materials it needs to manage them.

What should we check after the store launches?

Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need. Track checkout drop-off, conversion rate and product-page speed against your pre-launch or pre-migration figures to identify areas for review.
