Choosing
Which ecommerce platform should you choose?
Shopify suits you if you want hosting, security, checkout and platform updates handled for you. You can add features through apps, though their subscriptions add recurring costs. Deeper checkout changes are limited to the Shopify Plus plan, so check your requirements before choosing it.
WooCommerce is worth considering if your team already uses WordPress, or your store has substantial content alongside its products. You control the code, data and hosting, but someone needs to manage hosting, updates, security and compatibility between plugins. That responsibility should have an owner from the start.
A headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, fits unusual catalogues, product configurators and content-led brands. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. We recommend a platform after understanding your products and operations, including the work your team wants to handle itself.
Local
What Houston businesses need from an online store
Houston’s industrial base includes manufacturing and transportation businesses. A distributor selling to other businesses could need customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities and quote requests, with ordering on account for established buyers. Those requirements belong in the store’s scope before the catalogue and checkout are designed.
Houston also has a growing technology startup sector. A direct-to-consumer brand there might need subscriptions, reviews and email flows as it grows. A maker selling configurable products has a different requirement: choices beyond basic variants, with file uploads, previews or pricing rules to reflect what the customer has selected.
Rules
What a US ecommerce store needs to handle
Statewide sales tax rules differ across the US. Your checkout needs to reflect the tax decisions for your products and the places you sell. We configure the store’s tax settings alongside payment and shipping settings, using the decisions you provide.
Commercial emails need a valid physical postal address and a clear opt-out, and opt-out requests must be honoured within 10 business days. We connect your email tool and set up the commercial email content and opt-out handling around those requirements.
How it runs
How an ecommerce project runs with us
We work remotely through video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. IST is 10h30m (Eastern) to 13h30m (Pacific) ahead of the mainland US in winter, and 1 hour less during daylight saving time. The shared board keeps feedback and decisions visible across that difference.
- 01
Design
We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback before code is written.
- 02
Build
We develop the store using clean, fast code or a CMS your team can edit. We test it on real devices and browsers as the work progresses.
- 03
Test
You place orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases. Check the stock levels, order emails and the order records in your admin.
- 04
Launch and care
We set up your domain, email, analytics and search, then provide ongoing support. Your team can use the store’s admin for its daily work.

Cost & time
What affects the cost and timeline of ecommerce development
The work changes with the catalogue, design and information being moved.
Catalogue
Products with variants, bundles, engraving or measurements need more preparation than straightforward listings.
Product data
A clean spreadsheet saves the work of gathering and cleaning details spread across files, an old store and photo messages.
Design
Adapting a theme is smaller work than creating a custom design for unusual products or a distinct brand.
Migration
Moving customer records, order history, reviews and gift cards adds work beyond importing products alone.
Avoid
Mistakes to avoid when building your store
Leaving costs until the final checkout step
Show delivery and tax estimates on product or cart pages so shoppers see them earlier.
Adding an app for every small feature
Review what each app or plugin does, its recurring charges and possible conflicts; remove those you no longer use.
Testing only in sandbox mode
Place a real low-value order using live payment settings, then refund it to check the order email, currency and payment connection.
Sending emails without domain authentication
Set up SPF or DKIM so store messages are less likely to land in spam.
Questions
Asked by businesses in Houston
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to develop an ecommerce website?
There is no fixed price. Custom checkout and pricing rules affect the work, as does adding markets with their own currencies, languages and tax settings. For example, wholesale price tiers and customer-specific catalogues need different decisions from a standard checkout. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
Can you move my existing store to a new platform?
Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. We also map old product and category URLs to their closest new pages, using permanent server-side redirects. That includes planning a destination for products you decide not to carry over.
What is included in the checkout and payment setup?
We choose and configure the payment gateways, then test paid, failed, cancelled and refunded orders. Each test checks that the order record, stock level and customer email update correctly. We also cover store emails such as confirmations, dispatch messages with tracking links and password resets, using your branding and policies.
Will I own my store after it is built?
Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. An own store also keeps customer data and margin with your business; a marketplace brings its own traffic but sets the rules and retains the customer relationship.
What should we check after the store launches?
Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change. Give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
Can the store sell into other countries?
Yes. Selling across markets needs decisions about prices, currencies, tax display, duties, translated content and shipping options. Some platforms handle these in their core product; others need extensions. Gateway choice also depends on the country and platform, with options including Stripe, PayPal and local gateways.
