If your organisation is covered by the Privacy Act and gives an overseas contractor personal information, Australian Privacy Principle 8 generally applies. For that work, we set up an enforceable contract requiring the overseas recipient to handle the information in line with the applicable principles, and use individual accounts so access is easier to audit and remove. Agree which information the developer needs before granting access, including access to logs or project tools containing personal information.

A little preparation gives your developer real work to start on and a clear route to approval.

• Rank the backlog or describe an initial set of tasks, so the developer does not wait for work or fill time with low-value items.
• Write down your working hours, the overlap you need and who will answer the developer’s questions.
