This lorem ipsum generator produces placeholder text for layouts, wireframes and templates. Choose how many paragraphs, sentences or words you need, decide whether to start with the familiar opening line, and get the result as plain text or wrapped in HTML paragraph tags. Word and character counts update as you change the settings, so you can match the length of the real copy the design will eventually hold.
How to use it
- Enter a number and choose paragraphs, sentences or words.
- Tick the box to start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", or untick it for random words from the start.
- Tick the HTML option if you are pasting into code or a CMS source view.
- Press Shuffle for a different arrangement of words.
- Copy the text or download it as a file.
How to read the result
The default, three paragraphs, gives 166 words and 1,224 characters. Each paragraph has four to seven sentences of six to fifteen words, close to the rhythm of ordinary prose, so line breaks and paragraph spacing look realistic in a layout.
Use the counts to match the space your real content will need. A product card that will hold a 25-word description should be tested with 25 words, not three paragraphs. A blog template should be tested with something closer to a full article. Set the unit to Words and type the target number.
The HTML option wraps each paragraph in p tags, ready to paste into a template.
The words come from the traditional Latin passage and are deliberately meaningless, so reviewers look at the layout instead of reading the copy. That is also the risk: lorem ipsum hides headings that are too long, buttons that do not fit their labels and pages with nothing useful to say. Replace it with draft copy as early as you can.

What does lorem ipsum mean?
It is scrambled Latin taken from a passage by Cicero about pleasure and pain, written in 45 BC. Words are cut and altered so the text looks like a real language but cannot be read. It was popularised as dummy text by Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s and later by desktop publishing software.
Should I use lorem ipsum on a live site?
No. Search engines treat it as thin or unfinished content, and visitors read it as a broken page. Search your templates and CMS for the word lorem before launch. If a section has no real copy yet, hide it until it does.
