Stacked discounts multiply, so 25% then 10% extra is 32.5% off, not 35%.

What it does

A discount calculator shows the sale price and the saving for any price and offer. Enter the original price and a percent off, a fixed amount off, or the sale price if you want to find the percentage. Add a second discount for stacked codes and an optional tax rate for the final amount at checkout. A table lists the sale price at common discounts, which is handy when a store rounds its tiers. It runs in your browser with no account and no tracking.

How to use it

  1. Choose the type of discount: percent off, fixed amount off, or "I know the sale price".
  2. Enter the original price and the discount or sale price.
  3. Add an extra percentage if a second code applies on top, and a tax rate if you want the checkout total.
  4. Read the sale price and saving on the right.
  5. Copy the summary to share or keep.

How to read the result

Say an item is listed at 120 with 25% off. The saving is 30 and the sale price is 90. Add an extra 10% code on top and the price drops to 81, not 78, because the second discount applies to 90. The effective discount shows as 32.5% off, which is the number to compare with a competitor's flat 35% offer.

If you add 18% tax after the discount, the checkout total becomes 95.58. The tax is charged on the reduced price, which is how most stores and tax rules work.

The "find the percent" mode runs the other way. Enter 120 as the original and 90 as the sale price and it reports 25% off. Use it to check whether a "was/now" label is as generous as it looks.

A red badge appears when the discount is larger than the price or the sale price is above the original. The common-discounts table uses the original price only, so it does not change when you add a second code or tax.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How do I work out a percentage discount by hand?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving. Subtract that from the original price for the sale price. For 120 at 25% off, the saving is 30 and the sale price is 90. For a quick check, 10% is the price with the decimal moved one place left.

Do two discounts add up?

No. A second discount applies to the already reduced price, not the original. 25% off followed by an extra 10% is 32.5% off, not 35%. Stores rely on this difference, so check the effective percentage before comparing offers that stack differently.

Is tax applied before or after the discount?

In most countries tax is charged on the discounted price, so apply the discount first and then the tax. The optional tax field here does exactly that. If a store adds tax to the full price and then discounts, the result is slightly different, so check the receipt if the amounts matter.
