What you get

What’s included in mobile app development

  • App design

Screens and flows designed for iOS and Android conventions.

  • Cross-platform build

One React Native codebase for both platforms, with native modules where needed.

  • Backend & APIs

Accounts, data, notifications and admin tools behind the app.

  • Push notifications

Timely, targeted notifications that bring people back.

  • Payments & subscriptions

In-app purchases and subscriptions on both stores.

  • Store launch

App Store and Google Play listings, submission and release.

Tools we use: React Native, Expo, Swift, Kotlin, Firebase, Node.js.

Choosing

Should you build a cross-platform, native or web app?

We usually build with React Native, using one codebase for iOS and Android and adding native modules when a feature needs them. It uses JavaScript or TypeScript and renders each platform’s own interface components. Web developers can contribute, and some logic can be shared with a React website. This is a useful route when you want to cover both stores without maintaining a separate native app for each platform.

Native development fits apps with deep device features, heavy graphics or complex background work. The trade-off is maintaining separate Swift and Kotlin codebases. Flutter is another option: it draws its own interface and suits a heavily branded design when your team is willing to work in Dart. Both choices deserve a discussion about who will maintain the app after launch.

A progressive web app can suit a staff tool and avoids store review. It will not appear in app stores unless packaged for them, and on iPhone it can request notification permission only after someone adds it to the Home Screen. We help you choose by looking at the device features, interface and maintenance your product needs.

Local

What Wellington organisations need from an app

Wellington’s government, finance and business services organisations may already have customers using a web platform. When those customers use it frequently, an app can give them access to the same accounts and data without creating a separate source of records. We can build a shared backend for the app, website and admin tools.

The city also has film and special-effects businesses and public research universities. For production or research teams collecting information in the field, the useful details might be forms, photos, signatures and location on each job, with records synced when signal returns. Agree the offline behaviour early: showing previously loaded data is a smaller task than allowing edits and resolving conflicting changes later.

Rules

What an app project in New Zealand has to handle

New Zealand’s Privacy Act sets principles for collecting, storing, using and sharing personal information. That affects the account details and other personal data your app asks for, as well as who can access them. We map the information the app needs and set up the relevant data fields, staff access and privacy information around how your organisation uses that data. Bring your existing privacy policy to the discussion so the app’s screens reflect your actual practices.

How it runs

How a mobile app development project runs with us

We work remotely over video calls, WhatsApp and shared project boards. India is 6h30m behind New Zealand, or 7h30m behind during New Zealand daylight time, from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April. The shared board gives us a place to keep decisions and feedback moving across that difference.

  1. 01

    Discover

Tell us about your business, audience and goals. We agree the scope with you before moving into design, including the tasks people need to complete in the app.

  2. 02

    Design

We refine the iOS and Android screens with your feedback before writing code. Put the clickable prototype in front of a few customers or staff while changes are easier to make.

  3. 03

    Build

We develop the cross-platform app and use native modules where needed. We also include analytics and crash reporting in the first release so you can see screen use and device crashes.

  4. 04

    Launch

We handle store listings, submission and review under your developer accounts. You retain control of those accounts and provide the access needed for the release.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

These details help us establish the scope and prepare for store submission.

  • Developer accountsRegister Apple and Google accounts in your company’s name. Organisation accounts need a D-U-N-S number for verification.
  • Connected systemsList your website, CRM, booking software or payment provider, whether each has an API, and who holds admin access.
  • Privacy policyPrepare a policy matching what the app collects; Apple requires a link in the listing and inside the app.
  • TestersNew personal Google Play developer accounts need a closed test with opted-in testers before production release.
  • Login accessIf the app has a login, prepare a working demo account and a live backend for Apple’s review.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline of mobile app development

The scope of the screens and the work behind them shape the effort.

  • User roles

Customers, drivers and staff each need their own screens and permissions, even when they share a backend.

  • Live features

Tracking, chat and presence need persistent connections and more backend work than data loaded on request.

  • Integrations

A payment gateway, booking system or scanner adds setup, testing and handling for failures.

  • Interface design

Custom animation, additional languages and tablet layouts add design and testing across screens.

  • User-generated content

Filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details add moderation work to the build.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid with mobile app development

  • Wrapping a website in an app shell

Apple expects more than a repackaged site. Identify a useful app task before committing to a store build.

  • Making everyone sign up immediately

Let people see value before asking for an account. Apple expects access without login where significant account features are absent.

  • Requesting notifications on first launch

Ask when the benefit is clear, such as after an order. On Android 13 and later, notifications stay off until the user allows them.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Wellington

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does it cost to develop an app?

There is no fixed price for an app project. The scope of the app, the admin tools your staff need, and payment or subscription features all affect the work. For example, an admin panel might need screens for looking up customers, issuing refunds and blocking abusive accounts, alongside the app itself.

Which app development company should I hire?

Choose a company that can explain how it will measure use after release and how those measurements inform the work. Ask for a plan to track retention, drop-off in the main task and the crash-free rate. Those measures give you evidence about where people struggle and whether a release helped or hurt.

Can our app use the same accounts as our website?

Yes. We can build a shared backend for your app, website and admin tools. That gives you a way to keep the services connected while your staff work with the same system. Tell us which existing systems need to connect to it and who can provide the necessary access.

Who should hold the app accounts and code?

Your business should hold the developer accounts, signing access and code in its own name. Accounts or repositories held by a freelancer or agency can make the app difficult to move later. Establish who will manage that access before work starts, so a change of developer does not also mean losing control of the release.

What happens after the app is launched?

Launch is followed by support for bug fixes, operating system updates and new features. Google Play also requires apps and updates to target a recent Android API level. Some JavaScript and content fixes can go out through an over-the-air tool; native code changes and new permissions still need a store release.

What needs to be built for accounts and notifications?

An app with account creation needs a way for people to start deleting their account inside the app. For notifications, we set up a sending service, rules for who receives each message and when, and in-app settings where people can switch off categories they do not want.
