Choosing

Which platform should you choose?

Shopify is the simplest option to run. It suits a team that wants to manage a store without taking on the day-to-day responsibility for its underlying hosting. Before recommending a platform, we look at your products and operations, including how you need to manage the catalogue and checkout.

WooCommerce is a fit if your team already uses WordPress or has a substantial amount of content alongside its products. It gives you control over your code, data and hosting, with a corresponding responsibility: someone needs to look after hosting, updates, security and plugin compatibility. Decide who will do that work before you choose it.

A headless storefront, such as Next.js connected to a commerce back end, gives you more room for an unusual catalogue, a product configurator or a content-led store. It takes more build effort, and most later changes need a developer. That trade-off is worth considering if your team expects to make frequent changes after launch.

Local

What Ottawa organisations need from a store

Ottawa has a technology sector, and a company selling to other businesses may need a store that handles negotiated purchasing. Customer-specific prices, minimum order quantities, quote requests and ordering on account give buyers a way to place orders that reflects how they already buy from you.

The city is also home to the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College and Collège La Cité. An institution or retailer with a physical shop adding online sales needs to keep shop and online stock in step. A click-and-collect option gives customers a way to order online and pick up their purchases.

Rules

What a Canadian store needs to handle

GST/HST depends on the place of supply, such as the province or territory where goods are delivered. We configure tax settings around the destinations and product rules you supply, so the checkout reflects the applicable treatment.

For marketing emails, Canadian consent rules affect the signup flow and the messages you send. We set up the email connection with a consent-based signup, sender details including a current mailing address, and an unsubscribe mechanism.

How it runs

How an e-commerce project runs with us

We work remotely across the time difference. India is ahead of Eastern Time, which moves 1 hour closer during daylight saving time. We keep decisions and feedback in writing between calls, so work can move forward across your respective working days.

  1. 01

    Discover

We learn about your business, customers and goals, then agree the scope with you before design begins.

  2. 02

    Design

We design product, collection and checkout pages for desktop and mobile. You review the screens and give feedback before we write code.

  3. 03

    Build

We build the agreed storefront on Shopify, WooCommerce or a headless Next.js setup. You review how the store works against the agreed scope.

  4. 04

    Test

You place test orders across payment methods, shipping zones, discounts and tax cases, then check stock, emails and the order records in the admin.

  5. 05

    Launch and care

We set up the domain, email, analytics and search. Ongoing support follows launch.

Checklist

What to have ready before we talk

Gather these details for your store discussion.

  • A product spreadsheet with prices, SKUs, variants, stock, categories, weights and package sizes.
  • Original product photos from several angles, including an image for each colour variant.
  • Plain-language shipping, returns, refund, privacy and terms policies.
  • Business registration, bank and identity documents for a payment account in your business’s name.
  • Your delivery areas and courier choices, plus tax decisions checked with your accountant.

Cost & time

What affects the cost and timeline?

The scope determines the work involved.

  • Design

Adapting an existing theme takes less work than designing around unusual products or a distinct brand.

  • Integrations

An order export to accounting is smaller than syncing stock and prices in both directions with an ERP or marketplaces.

  • Migration

Moving products alone has a different scope from moving customers, order history, reviews and gift cards. Existing customers usually need a password reset.

  • Markets

Selling across countries adds decisions about currencies, duties, translated content and shipping. Some platforms need extensions for parts of that work.

Avoid

Mistakes to avoid when building a store

  • Moving without a redirect plan

Map each old product and category URL to its closest new page, including products you drop.

  • Adding an app for every feature

Review what each app does and remove unused ones to limit scripts, clutter and conflicts.

  • Overloading product pages

Compress images and load review, chat and tracking scripts only where needed.

  • Testing only in sandbox mode

Place a real low-value order with live payment settings and refund it to check the payment setup and order email.

Questions

Asked by businesses in Ottawa

Page updated 5 November 2026

How much does an e-commerce website cost to develop?

There is no fixed price. The main drivers include the size and complexity of your catalogue, and how much product data needs cleaning before import. We send a free quote once we have learned about your business and agreed the scope with you.

Which payment gateway should I choose?

Choose a gateway that supports your registered business and the currencies you sell in. We support Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay and local gateways according to the country and platform. Compare the payment methods your customers need, along with settlement, refund and dispute handling, before choosing.

What is included in a store build?

A build covers the catalogue, product and collection pages, cart, checkout, customer accounts, policies and the admin your team uses. It also covers order emails. Those include confirmation, dispatch and refund messages, with wording that matches your policies and a sender on your store’s domain.

Can you migrate my existing store?

Yes. We can migrate products, customers and order history where the platforms allow it. Before the move, identify which of those records your team needs to keep using in the new store, and we can include the permitted transfers in the migration scope.

Will I own the store after launch?

Yes. You own your domain, content and code, so you are not locked to the team that built the store. Keep access to those assets with your business and make sure the people responsible for maintaining the store know where to find them.

What should we check after launch?

Track conversion rate, average order value, checkout drop-off, repeat purchases and product-page speed against your figures from before launch or migration. Retest the full checkout after an app, plugin or theme change, and give each staff member a separate login with only the permissions they need.
