Skills
What a good WordPress developer brings
Look for someone who makes the site practical to edit as well as maintainable in code. These skills give your team control over everyday content and give developers a sound way to make changes.
- Block editor workbuild custom blocks and patterns, with theme.json settings that help editors arrange pages without breaking the design.
- Safe customisationuse actions and filters in a child theme or custom plugin, leaving WordPress core and other developers’ plugins untouched.
- Structured contentcreate post types, taxonomies and custom fields so editors have forms suited to their content.
- Security caresanitise input, escape output, protect forms with nonces and limit administrative access.
- Speed checksoptimise images, caching and database queries, then check Core Web Vitals after changes.
- Store developmentmaintain WooCommerce product types, checkout changes, payment and shipping extensions, and order data.
Use cases
What you can hire WordPress developers for
WordPress suits content-led websites, blogs and small to mid-sized stores where your editors need a familiar admin area. You might need a company website built on a custom or adapted theme, with pages your marketing team can update without asking a developer for each edit.
You can also commission a custom plugin for a business feature, a CRM or booking integration, or an admin area shaped around your editors’ work. For a headless build, WordPress holds the content while a separate front end displays it through the REST API or WPGraphQL.
For a complex application with many user roles and custom workflows, consider a framework such as Laravel or Django instead.
How hiring works
How hiring works with us
You direct the work through a shared backlog. Our developers already work on client projects, and a lead reviews their code and keeps work on track.
- 01
Agree the workflow
we work in your repository, tickets and stand-ups, using the tools and review process your existing developers already have.
- 02
Set up the project
we walk through the product and codebase, set up the environment and start with a small real task that touches the main parts of the system.
- 03
Document the handover
share your architecture, coding standards, branching and release process, plus instructions for running the project locally. We write down gaps found during onboarding.
- 04
Control access
start with individual accounts and the least permissions needed on staging; add production access once the review process is in place.
- 05
Review progress
we provide regular demos and direct access to the team, alongside code reviews, tests and documentation for maintainable work.
Time zones
Working hours between Malaysia and India
IST is 2h30m behind Malaysia. The working week is Monday–Friday in most states and Sunday–Thursday in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu. Agree a fixed overlap window for stand-ups and quick questions, and keep it free of other meetings on both sides.
Written end-of-day updates give you progress, blockers and next steps to pick up when your day starts. Put acceptance criteria, screenshots and links in tickets to reduce back-and-forth. Handover notes should record unfinished work, open questions and decisions, so work can continue when the teams are not online together.
Rules
Personal data in your Malaysia project
If the site transfers personal data out of Malaysia, your notice needs to inform data subjects about the transfer, and you need records of each receiver, destination country, data type and purpose. We set up the personal data protection notice on the site and make space in the project handover for those records.
Your contract with a third party or data processor also needs clauses governing personal data processing and security. We include the processing and security arrangements in the project contract.
Vetting
How to judge a WordPress developer before you commit
- Ask to see sites they built and, where possible, use the editor. Check whether your team can find and update the content it needs.
- Ask how they choose a plugin. Look for checks on update history, support activity, reviews and the code loaded on each page.
- Ask what happens before a live store’s plugins are updated. Look for backups, staging and checks of checkout and forms afterwards.
- Set a paid taska custom block or a post type with fields and a template, delivered as a theme or plugin in a Git repository.
- Judge progress through merged pull requests, demos and shipped features, rather than the number of meetings held.
Checklist
What to have ready before developers start
A little preparation gives your developer useful work from the start.
- Rank your backlog, or prepare a first set of tasks with clear descriptions.
- Identify the skills and seniority you need, including experience with any legacy system.
- Share your working hours, the overlap you need and who will answer the developer’s questions.
- Define donerecord the review rules, expected tests and how changes are deployed and approved.
Cost & time
What affects the cost of hiring WordPress developers
The plan and the condition of your codebase shape the work involved.
Seniority
experienced developers cost more and need less supervision; junior developers suit defined tasks with close review.
Commitment
full-time, part-time and set-hours plans have different requirements, including the notice needed to change the plan.
Overlap
the amount of your working day that needs coverage affects availability and how the plan is set up.
Existing code
legacy systems, specialist skills and missing documentation narrow the pool and slow onboarding.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Malaysia
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a dedicated WordPress developer?
There is no fixed price. The commitment you choose and the work needed on your existing site shape the quote. A full-time plan suits an ongoing backlog, while part-time or hourly work suits maintenance or bursts of tasks. Page builders can also make a later theme change harder. We send a free quote once the scope is agreed.
How do I choose between direct hiring and a studio?
Choose according to the control you need and the hiring work you want to take on. Direct hiring gives you more control and takes longer to set up. With a studio, recruitment, payroll, equipment and cover for absence usually sit with the studio, while you direct the work.
What WordPress work is included?
The work can cover site repairs and the plugins your project needs. For a slow, hacked or broken site, that can mean malware removal, updates to PHP and WordPress, backups and monitoring. Common tools include Advanced Custom Fields, WooCommerce, a forms plugin and a caching plugin suited to the host.
Who owns the code and project accounts?
You own the code. We provide an NDA and hand code ownership to you. Keep repositories, cloud accounts and third-party services under your organisation, and confirm the assignment of intellectual property in the contract so the handover is clear.
Can you support the site after launch?
Yes. You can scale the plan up or down, or pause it as your needs change. A WordPress site with many plugins needs regular updates and security care, so include that work in your plan after launch alongside any new features you want.
How do remote developers work with our existing team?
We fit into your existing repositories, tools and review process. Keep individual admin accounts instead of sharing a login, so access is easier to audit and remove. Early code reviews also help set standards and catch misunderstandings while they are cheaper to fix.
