Skills
What a good Shopify developer brings
The right skills depend on your store's backlog. Look for someone who can explain how a feature will be edited, tested and maintained after it is released.
- Editable themesBuild Liquid sections and blocks that your team can add, remove and reorder in the theme editor without changing code.
- Product dataUse metafields and metaobjects for details such as size charts or ingredient lists, then display them in the theme.
- Custom appsUse the GraphQL Admin and Storefront APIs, handle order and inventory webhooks, and work within API rate limits.
- Store speedKeep themes lean, compress images, limit app scripts and use lazy loading; check speed reports after adding an app.
- Checkout logicUse Shopify Functions for custom discounts, payment and delivery options, or checkout validation.
Use cases
What you can hire Shopify developers for
You might need a custom theme or a rework of an existing store, with clearer product pages and collections that are easier to browse. For a migration from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, the work includes moving products, customers and orders and setting up redirects.
Wholesale features, subscriptions, bundles and product configurators can use apps, metafields and Functions. A headless storefront gives you more control of the front end while Shopify handles products, cart and checkout.
Shopify suits brands that want the platform to handle hosting, security, checkout and payments. If you need deep custom logic or full control of hosting, compare WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce or a custom build, along with the maintenance each requires.
How hiring works
How hiring works with us
You direct the work, and we provide developers who already work on our client projects. A lead reviews code and keeps the work on track.
- 01
Choose capacity
Hire developers full time, part time or for a fixed number of hours a month, according to the work you have ready.
- 02
Connect the workflow
We work in your repository, tickets and stand-ups, with an overlap window agreed before work starts.
- 03
Start with a real task
Plan environment setup and a product and codebase walkthrough, followed by a small task that touches the main parts of the system.
- 04
Set access
Give each developer an individual account with only the permissions needed. Start in staging and add production access once the review process is in place.
- 05
Agree ownership
We provide an NDA and hand code ownership to you. Keep repositories and third-party services under your organisation and confirm intellectual property assignment in the contract.
Time zones
Working hours between the Netherlands and India
India's IST is 4h30m ahead of the Netherlands, or 3h30m ahead during Central European Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. We use Slack, WhatsApp or email and regular calls; you speak directly to the developers doing the work.
Agree a fixed overlap window for stand-ups and quick questions, and protect it from other meetings. Tickets with acceptance criteria, screenshots and links make the next action clear; handover notes record unfinished work, open questions and decisions when both sides are not online at the same time.
Rules
What your Netherlands store needs to handle
If your store uses tracking cookies, visitors need to give explicit consent before those cookies are set. We set up a consent banner and connect the tracking scripts to that choice; pre-ticked boxes and cookie walls do not count as valid consent.
If work gives our India-based developers access to personal data, the transfer needs attention: India has no European Commission adequacy decision. We set up access around the agreed transfer safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, and assess whether measures such as encryption or pseudonymisation are needed for the work.
Vetting
How to judge a Shopify developer before you commit
- Ask how they would add a feature without another app. Listen for a reasoned choice between metafields, theme sections, Functions and a small custom app.
- Use a paid taskask for a theme section with merchant settings and blocks, built in a development store and delivered through Git.
- Discuss a migration. Ask for their approach to URL mapping, redirects, metadata and checking broken links after launch.
- Ask which jobs they would advise against doing on Shopify. Their explanation should show where they understand the platform's limits.
Checklist
What to have ready before developers start
A little preparation gives your developer useful work from the start.
- PrioritiesPrepare a ranked backlog or a first set of clearly described tasks.
- SkillsIdentify the front-end, back-end or framework experience your work needs, including any legacy system.
- AvailabilityNote your working hours, the overlap you need and who will answer developer questions.
- Definition of doneWrite down review rules, expected tests, and how work is deployed and approved.
- Technical notesShare the architecture, coding standards, branching and release process, and instructions for running the project locally. Record any gaps found during onboarding.
Cost & time
What affects the cost of hiring Shopify developers
The plan you choose and the support your work needs shape the cost.
Seniority
Experienced developers cost more and need less supervision; junior developers suit well-defined tasks with close review.
Commitment
Full-time, part-time and fixed-hours plans differ in how capacity is reserved and how much notice is needed to change it.
Overlap
The amount of your working day a developer needs to cover affects availability and how the plan is arranged.
Management
The arrangement changes according to whether a lead plans work and reviews code or you manage the developer directly.

Questions
Asked by businesses in Netherlands
Page updated 5 November 2026
How much does it cost to hire a Shopify developer?
There is no fixed price. The capacity you need and the store's plan and app requirements shape the scope; unusual pricing, products or workflows also need closer assessment. Checkout limits vary by plan and affect the approach. Once the scope is agreed, we send you a free quote.
How do I hire a dedicated remote developer?
Start by deciding who will direct the work and preparing tasks the developer can act on. A studio usually handles recruitment, payroll, equipment and cover for absence while you direct priorities. Direct hiring gives you more control and takes longer to set up, so compare that work with the support you need.
What is included when I hire through you?
You get development and design support, with priorities reviewed together and regular progress demos. You can see work as it develops and discuss changes directly with the team. Use demos and shipped features to assess progress, alongside merged pull requests, instead of measuring it by the number of meetings.
Can your developers work with my existing team?
Yes. We fit into your repositories, tools and review process. Give each person an individual account instead of sharing an admin login, so access is easier to audit and remove. Keep code reviews in place from the start to establish standards and catch misunderstandings early.
Who owns the store's code and content?
You own your domain, content and code, with no lock-in. Set out ownership in your contract before work begins, and keep a clear record of the decisions and unfinished items that need to be handed over. That gives your team a useful reference when it takes work forward.
Can you support the store after launch?
Yes. You can continue the engagement for fixes, features and improvements, and scale it up, down or pause it as your needs change. For theme work, developers can use Shopify CLI, Theme Check and development stores to test changes, with the GitHub integration supporting the theme workflow.
